Merc folks, the 1916 MS-67 reappears

Remember the 1916 Merc in MS-67 that was for sale on DLRC for $750. It was sold (no longer on their site). It just reappeared on the B&M site.... for only $895! Everyone thought $750 was too much, it will be interesting to see if a No Bands coin will sell for this much. This is one of the few condition rarities of a common coin in the Merc set. Last I saw, the No Bands pop was 1/0, so I am guessing this is the same coin. It would be nice if someone could validate the current population from the on line reports.

    Yep, still pop one.

  • It is still a pop 1/0 coin.

  • Is a low pop really that big of a deal if it isn't in primo #1 condition?

I mean if there are better coins then there are better coins, right?

I think most would argue that MS67 meets the definition of primo on a coin that old.

Is this a 16P? If so it is rather common over all and MOST 16P have FB's (as do 16D, btw). What does the typical 16P 67FB cost? This coin should be somewhat less than that.

Russ, I believe this coin was the subject of an upgrade from 66. As was stated earlier, the pop for these are low. I think there are about 8 or 9 No Bands 66 for the 1916-P. Most of these were fully struck, so the No Bands for this year are an anomaly. I dont know anyone besides myself that collects No Bands Mercs. Many collectors will accept one due to cost considerations. That is why I think the price on this is way too high. I would think that it should be priced between a 65FB and 66FB coin.

    Rick:

I offered a 16P to a dealer yesterday and he wanted no part of buying the dime because being from the East Coast originally he stated they were still available in Roll quanities back there. Being from the West Coast I have no idea if this is true or not. His Roll statement also included other P mint Mercury Dimes. If his statement is a True fact I believe I would put some of the searching for high grade early P mint dimes on the Very back burner untill all other D & S mint examples are found. Its almost certain, IMO, that Roll quantities of these are not still in existance.

$895 for a 1916P no mater what the grade is seems very steep and a obvious attempt at Coin Hype to Me. Talking about a NB coin in this statement. If memory serves Me correctly one of our Registry Folks bought a Very Nice 1916P MS67FB Coin for over $100 less than what is being asked for the 67NB coin.

    Just thoughts.

  • Rick,
I bought a 16-p in 67fb for $862 at auction back in april,I do not think
the prices have increased that much,IMHO the coin should be priced
    between $400-500 dollars

    I see in this week's coin world that North America Certified Trading has a 1916 FB 67 selling for $825, 1920-D 66FB for$4995, 20-S 66FB for $6900 & 21 66FB for $5495. Nice coins.
