Sets with and without Varieties causing problems?

Should we have to enter 2 different sets for sets that have varieties? Some people register their sets in one, some in both. It gets confusing to track sets. Since the set without varieties is just a subset of the one with, why don't we just register our coins in one set and then they show up in both? With the short set of Lincolns coming soon, if I upgrade 1954 cent, am I going to have to enter it in 4 different sets (assuming there is going to be a short set with varieties)? Why don't I just have one set and 4 different ways of viewing it. I stopped maintaining the Merc Compare spreadsheet that I was doing because I didn't know which one I should do (varieties or no varieties) and I didn't want to do both. Is there anyone who collects the varieties that would object to having his/her set listed in the non varieties set? I figure people do not register in the other set just because they do not want to maintain 2+ sets. I know this would knock down the perceived number of sets that PCGS has registered, but I think it would be more accurate way of counting.

  • I would guess about 90% of the sets registered in the with varities are also registered in the without. The sets registered in the without varities but not in the with, are probably just collectors who have no interest in the varities or have not gotten around to adding the varities to their collection yet focusing on just the major types first. I think for the most part collectors enjoy competing in the different sets even if alot of the coins are the same between them.

the worst thing is that a variety doesn't even count as a coin in the regular set! for instance - you can't count an 1876CC with doubled die reverse as an 1876CC trade dollar in the non varietal set - that just doesn't seem right somehow. image
  • tradedollarnut,

I did not ever realize you could not use varities in a non variety set. You are right it does not make any sense. Whats the differeance?

  • You are all right on point. The technology could easily support this with extra "radio buttons" for collectors to choose where they want to display their collections. The real issue for me (speaking only to the lincoln registry) is the fact that having only 4 varieties (and no less the most expensive coins in the entire series) leaves everybody wondering why waste the time!!!!!! This situation was MUCH better previously when you could at least show a dozen varieties. PCGS has so many sets to bring up to the same level (I'll suspend judgement here on what I think about this initial level) that it could and will take years till their solution reaches the point where it will mean anything. I've got my varieties ready PCGS, so just you let us know.
