Submitting to PCGS

LucyBopLucyBop Posts: 14,001 ✭✭✭
I have never submitted coins for grading, so this will be Lucy's first time. I have some early 60s Mint sets in their original packaging from the mint, I want to just get the Franklin's graded. Should I send in the whole set and allow them to remove the half from the packaging or should I remove the half myself and put it in a holder and then send it in? Boys, teach Lucy.

    Hi Lucy-

You can submit entire sets to PCGS and they will remove the coins, but they require that all coins in the set be graded. In modern sets that are encased in plastic, sometimes that's easier.

But if you just want the havles graded, cut them out and submit them in a 2x2 flip (non-pvc)

    Make some good ones!

  • WOW - A chance to teach Lucy! - Can't pass that up!

Lucy - you'll want to take the coin out yourself and put it in a certification slip which are available from most coin dealers. These aren't the cardboard ones but the plastic ones that look like two little pockets folded over. Usually you'll get instructions from the grading company on how to prepare your coins for grading on the grading form. Once you have your coins ready - make sure you package them securely - run naked out into your back yard, look up to the sky and yell - MAKE'EM 66's!!!! at the top of your lungs - I find this helps quite a bit image Now you're ready to send your coins out.

    Best regards,

    Frank

I wouldn't recommend sending all of your coins at once. Usually the coins in those sets aren't nice enough to justify the grading fees. As a test get a 5 power magnifying glass and examine the coins with a light that has a 100 watt bulb. Pick out a dozen or so coins that look the nicest--coins that are not marked up, have a good strike etc. etc. If they come back with a good grades then try the rest. You might get "Lucky."

As far as sending the coins in you can cut the coins out of the set and send them in that way. Good luck!!!!

    Welcome Lucy.

I have submitted several hundred coins from modern mint sets and I feel the best way is to carfully cut between the seal so that the individual coin is still sealed in the cellophane. This way there can be no doubt of the coin's origin. Then place it in a 2.5 X 2.5 plastic flip and follow the remaining submission instructions.

I think you will find youwill get much help and attention from this group.
    The impossible just takes longer.

Welcome Lucy, and good luck. Be sure to search those sets for nice frosty cameo coins.

(Also, a word of caution about coming onto to the boards with such phrases as "it's my first time' & 'boys teach Lucy'. There was another woman did such, and it led to a lot of unwelcome comments, phone calls, acusations, etc. She eventually departured the boards. You can see you already drew a requests to run naked outdoors and send video.)

I would rather see that woman from a ms65 1916 quarter running naked in my back yard.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

follow the suggestion of TheBlackKnight and cut the coins you want to submit free of the set but still sealed in the mint cello. then just place in a flip. when in doubt about a submission you can call the PCGS customer service number. they have always been helpful for me and answered this same question when i asked.

Hi Lucy. Ebay pictures of cert. coins are a good guide, for the most part. Compare your's before you cut out of the sets. They may be betted as is. If you don't care about the grading fees it's fun to do it for the heck of it.

  • it will cost you 12.00 to 15.00 each way in postage whether it is one or 10 coins. obviously if you send one coin and they grade it poorly you are betting a losing hand. if you send off 8 coins and three turn out to be ms 66 or 67 you probably will at least break even financially. it is a tough way to make money, it is suprisingly difficult to take a mint set and get good results the first time. cello mint sets are pretty beat up in a lot of cases. i think a lot of mint sets are floating around that have been looked at by coin dealers and just sold as is because they will not grade well enough to warrant the price of the grading service. it is kind of neat to look up the retail price of coins in the pcgs price list and become aware of the values of coins based on the grading. if a coin is only worth 20.00 in an ms 67 why would you spend the time and effort to have it graded unless it appears almost perfect to you? also be aware that the list price may be higher than what the coin will actually sell for. a good value indicator is ebay coins ending today in the catagory that you are interested in. turning a raw coin into a valuable slab is possible but not as easy as it looks. good luck!!
