There are California gold replica/token with 1/2 on the reverse with no denomation on them. You could interpret it as 1/2 dollar or 1/2 dime. I think it has a pig on it but not 100% sure. If you ask them what's on the coin we'll know if it's one of these.
  • well they say it says halfdime on the reverse. sounds to me like a plated halfdime. i thought of the replicas too, but they insist it real gold. i guess i may never know until i see one/it.

    Hey Sjbrian,
Off the thread topic but I looked at your web site and how did you get the pictures of your coins. They look awesome.
  • almost everything was done on a flatbed scanner. its a mid-priced HP, can't remember the model right now. some stuff was scanned at kinko's copies. they have a better scanner and software than mine.

Hi! There are not any "gold" half dimes. However, is it possible your in laws were looking at a "toned" half dime? I mention this because some half dimes (particularly the 1858 - 1860's) sometimes toned a magnificent GOLD color! Normally, this would be more evident on an unciruclated example - though I've seen this in circs too. I own an 1858 "inverted date" half dime NGC 63, that is BLAST gold color. It truly resembles a "gold coin."

  • i bet that might be it. odd thing is they were talking to coin dealer last week who said he collected gold half dimes(after they mentioned the coin). i think he was just trying to reel them into buying something, which they did. they ended up buying me a beautiful 1832 half cent and an 1873(open), 3 cent piece, so i can't complain too much here.

Hi toyonakataro! Yes, I will post an image of the coin. I have to pull the coin then take the photo. I'll try to get it posted by tomorrow afternoon. Thanks!

    Thanks matteproof
How nice it would be to see a golden half dime...image
  • Hi. Here is the 1858 "inverted date" half dime. It is an NGC ms64 (earlier I had said NGC ms63). The obverse is layered in color that is bold GOLD with reddish tones. The image of the obverse is not revealing as much of the gold color (appearing somewhat more orange), but the coin is VIVIDLY toned with gold color. The reverse is more of a deep LEMON yellow color. The "inverted date" itself is EXTREMELY bold on this example. Hope you like.

ps. sorry for the somewhat fuzzy photos image
