I use to do that.. whenever buying back in 96/97, I ended up indirectly collecting Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Always pulled his inserts, even a redemption for an autographed practice jersey that I never received from Scoreboard.

The guy I always pulled was DerMarr Johnson. In my box of 2000-2001 Topps Reserve I pulled his RC and Graded RC. I also pulled a few more rc's of him and now recently I pulled a Cool Cats Jersey card of him.

The guy I always got last year was Brian Scalabrine, rookie for the New Jersey Nets and basically a big goofy white dude w/ no chance. Man, if he were Gasol, I'd be a rich man.

Do you think Gasol RC's will stay strong in the market? You don't see too many white boy rc's doing well recently.

Hitech, it's the strangest thing, but the market seems to be actively differentiating between foreign white guys, who actually have a more street-style game (dunking, hitting threes, slashing to the basket) and American white guys who are traditionally slower and more mechanical.

Phil Taylor (who is black) recently did a very interesteing article for CNNSI about how maybe guys like Gasol and Nowitzki are so good because they haven't been told their entire lives that "white guys can't play basketball." They never learned that they had limitations, so they ignored them. Pretty interesting stuff.

As for can white players remain popular, I think they can...never forget the sad fact that their will always be some degree of racism in the world, and no matter how little, they're will always be guys who consciously or subconsciously collect white guys. Look what Mike Miller and Jason William's cards still book, compared to actual production.

Been there Auto, back in 96 I pulled a full size Kobe auto'd ball out of a $11 pack of scoreboard...

i had the same problem with shareef abdur rahim in 96/97, but have always pulled a ton of barry sanders, rocket ismail, karim abdul jabbar, and akili smith. in a box of 99 press pass i got(when he was worth something) i pulled 6 regular rookies, a game jersey, golden arm(or something like that) and the x's and 0's. I was happy at the time, and am really glad i dumped em off! but i usually get those 3 players(not barry anymore) in every pack i buy.
