Best looking Basketball set

I don't know much about basketball cards. Just curious, which are the top 3 best looking basketball sets in your opinion? Criteria:

1) Between 1970-1985
2) Cards have to be "regular" size. No over-size cards

    hands down............... no contest.................
1955 Scott's Potato Chips , a scarce regional similar in size to '54 Johnston Cookies or '71 topps GM, done in characiture style. George Mikan anchors this set of 12 Milwaukee Bucks.........they are simply fabulous.
    '61 Feers are second.
    good stuff.........

MURCERFAN - I like your choices, but his criteria was 1970-85. With that in mind, I like the 1971/2 set, very colorful and includes NBA & ABA player selections...jay

    I agree with Jay. It's the 71/72 set! It's a classic!
  • Best looking set, well ok, I'm a little biased towards Star Co, since at one point 7-8 years ago, the bulk of my basketball collection was in '84-86 Star (back before this dark cloud hung over them). Not only do they have great player selection, but the colors used, the borders, the clean design, they are spectacular.

My runners up would be '71/72 and '77/78. I'm also partial to '73/74 for some reason. Some of the star cards don't look so hot (such as the Maravich, West cards), but when the regular design is used, they look kind of neat (the little hoop and basket on the bottom is fun). To get them in Mint 9 is very tough.

The ugliest set is probably '78/79, maybe '75/76. The fleer sets from '86-89 were so-so.

    My top three would be:
    1) 1983-84 Star
    2) 1977-78 Topps
    3) 1971-72 Topps
I like the varying borders on the Star Cards and the pictures are quite good. Something about the 77-78's with the white borders. I like the front of the 71-72's but not particularly the backs.

No votes for any '80s Fleer sets yet? I think the '88-89 Fleer set is very colorful and clean. Same for the '87-88 (though a little less colorful). The '86-87 set, while having less than sharp photography, still remains the most recognizable basketball set IMHO.

However, CardKid, I agree- the Star sets were (and still are) very attractive.
  • My votes, for what it's worth . . .

    1. 1975-76 Topps: great photos, beautiful design, lots of fun ABA players and Moses Malone's rookie. The card design reminds me a little of 1967 Topps baseball.

    2. 1972-73 Topps: bright colors, cool early-70s uniforms (especially the Hawks; what were they thinking?), and Dr. J's rookie.

    3. 1981-82 Topps: an overlooked set because of overproduction and the strange regional sets. But the card design and photos are absolutely top-notch.

    4. 1971-72 Topps: great colors, these cards look amazing in mint condition.

    Worst sets:

    1. 1974-75 Topps: blah design.
    2. 1979-80 Topps: these cards don't look impressive even in mint condition.
    3. 1980-81 Topps: the "three cards per card" idea is neat, but these don't display well.
