Is this 1909-S VDB cleaned?

The color doesn't look right to me, but I'd like to hear what others here think.

Edited to add that the description says it is. Didn't read it carefully enough.

that big X? Definitely not a slabbed coin... how does a penny become a red X?

It looks scrubbed and fingerprinted after the fact. Some serious circular grooves in the obverse as well. Someone who knows the S mint variations better than me should confirm this, but the mint mark is further west than I've ever seen it.

Definitely doesn't have eye appeal, but it does have a lot of bids.

Is it my imagination, or does the S have a different shade of color than the rest of the lettering? I've never seen a real 09-S VDB in person, but I don't get a good feeling about the look of the S. Maybe I'm just too suspicious though.

to the best of what i can tell by a lousy pic, the mm is reasonably placed.

Die #1 has the mintmark real far west. It looks like die #1 but I can't really tell postively from the scan.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • The obverse looks much more worn than the reverse.
