Anybody heard of American Savings & Loan Association of Houston @ 1949 West Gray? I picked up a promotional coin from them. It's in a hinged snap lock plastic case with about a 2x4 black card with a BU Morgan. Kinda reminds me of a Paramount Redfield slab. The coin's nice, about a ms63 1884-O VAM 13 with repunched mintmark. Old I guess since SLAs are a thing of the past.

Did you pay for it or did they give it to you for opening a account?

I imagine the bank gave it to new customers when they opened a savings account.

    Dog,

    I've picked up a number of these S & L coins...mostly target toned.

I don't know if the S & L is still around, but from what I understand it gave these coins out back in the 60's as promotional pieces for opening new accounts, etc.

They're pretty neat, aren't they? Is yours toned?

60s huh? I didn't know it was that old. Mine's target too. 1 sided obv with blue turning into purplish red just starting to touch portrait. Fields goldish bronze, Liberty's face & hair still brilliant. Colors are light & translucent.
Thanks for the good info as usual gsa! image

There's no listing for them in the phone book. I imagine they bit the dust, or merged with some large bank, etc. a long time ago. image

    W. Gray is one of the oldest part of town I think.Just west of downtown.I have no idea when these were offered.60s or earlier most likely.Someone in banking here may know the year(s) these were promoted.
How did you come across this coin?Got a scan?
  • west gray is where all the rich people live...you know enron ceo types........the AS plastic holders were given out in the 60`s like tiddyhouse ect......it was the marketing move of the 60s matter of fact.......the cardboard holders have a high sulfur content and the plastic holder leaks......which is the nneded enviroment for a monster toned coin....the holders themselves are worth some nice money a future monster makers.............it only takes 30 years....but the tuff thing is to watch your life go by waiting for this puppy to tone.....and it does not tone pretty at first....after 5 years youll see ukco.....after 10 years youll see more ukco.....after 15 years youll see some potential.....after 20 years youll see some thing looking really nice ....and youll say geez in 10 more years i am going to have a monster....why didnt i put more of them away into these holders.......then youll say lets see...im 50 now by 80 i couild have a bunch of these........:-)

i have been there ....done that

    gregg
my goal is to find the monsters and i go where they are but i sometimes miss some.... so if you have any and want to sell IM THE BUYER FOR THEM!!!

Thanks greg the monsterman. It looks a little prettier than the Tiddyhouse halves. All the ones I've seen are brown & yucky but I haven't seen a whole bunch. I saw a Morgan in a Tidyhouse holder several weeks ago on eBay but an unsavory seller had it listed so I stayed away. I could use one though.
    Here's a scan Cam40.

Is that one of those old style phone numbers to the right of the address?? That, plus the lack of a zip code (which began in 1962, I think) may date this back to the 1950's. image
