Indian cent showdown

From the PCGS eCollector news letter.

<< <i>INDIAN CENT SHOWDOWN. Three important collections of Mint State Indian Cents from the Set Registry will be on display at the PCGS booth at the September Long Beach Show. Stay tuned for further details about this exciting event. >>

I remember awhile back a thread about the Ally collection of Indian Cents (Member name Joshua) where STEWARTBLAYNUMIS challanged Joshua to a showdown. Is this what PCGS is talking about in the newsletter? Is it going to happen?

Here is a link to the original thread.

  • Hmmmm...I should see if I can put together a braddick collection of worst known Indian Cents and bring it to the show for comparison.
  • Bill,
BJ did contact me about displaying my set along Stewart's and I believe they might have been able to have the second ranked set (Richard) to be displayed also. I would have liked it in NY but the timing was too short to get it all done. I think it is important that as many people as possible get to view the top sets where they can see so many high quality coins at once.
I'm hoping that PCGS will continue this program in the future so we can all admire the top sets in all categories and see what goes into them.

Can you take a minute and describe the process of getting a complete collection to a show for an event like this? What does it take and cost? Who do you use and what are the considerations? I agree everybody wins when an event like this takes place. Maybe another time.
  • lincolnsence,

This was a pretty easy process for this one. Since I'm on the East Coast I submitted my set for regrading at the ANA. PCGS took over from there and shipped the coins back out to CA and will keep them until after the Long Beach show when they will send them back to me. Scariest part was taking them into NYC and getting to the show. PCGS is handling the display and security of the coins at the show.

By the way I didn't have to have the set regraded but I've added quite a few coins since the last time it was done and I wanted to have my granddaugter's name on all the slabs (Ally).

I've found that it's easier to drop off coins at a show and then let PCGS take care of the shipping. They are experts and can do it safer than trying to mail coins myself. So I try to time things to coincide with shows. Not a lot of info here but I hope this helps.

  • Joshua,
Have you checked out these Ebay auctions:Link
I found them while looking for a 1909s lincoln. New seller but the coins are amazing. An 1860 in PCGS MS67? Wow

Will you be attending the "Showdown" ?Will your coins be able to be viewed out of the showcase? Will I get to meet you? I would love to be able to talk to yourself and Richard.

I missed one opportunity to see Joshua's coins -- the day he was bringing them to the ANA happened to be my birthday, with prior arrangements. So I also wish this was being done on the East coast! Would be a shame to have all these special coins in one place without a professional photographer there as well...

After thinking about it for all of 10 minutes I just did a search for Long Beach airline tickets. This is something I can't pass up.
  • Stewart,

Unfortunately because of the earlier date of this year's show (Sept) and it's proximity to Sept 11, I won't be able to attend the show.

I haven't put any restrictions on PCGS so they will determine how the coins will be displayed.

As for Richard, I don't as of yet know who he is but I'm sure at some point in the future we'll all meet.

    Paul,

Check out Jet Blue from Kennedy. Good direct flight and fairly inexpensive. And they go non-stop into Long Beach. If you don't make it out to Long Beach let me know and we'll try to arrange a time for you to view my set. Even though for you I would think that seeing three sets at once would make the trip worthwhile.

  • I think this is a great idea. PCGS should continue doing it at all the shows expanding into the different series. My only regret is I will not be able to be there.image

I'll be there Thur afternoon & all day Friday. I found a nonstop American fight out of Kennedy before I read your recommendation Joshua, unfortunately it's a one stop on the return trip. Hopefully American airlines won't be retiring this plane before then, as I just read they're doing with much of their fleet (along with 7000 layoffs)!

This is an opportunity to see 3 great sets in a non auction environment, very unique. I think it's pretty cool it all started as a good natured challenge on this forum. Good job by PCGS for running with this, and good publicity as well.

No joke: I've been putting off laser corrective surgery for my eyes (contact lenses are starting to irritate them) but now I might get it done before this show. Want to be able to see these coins with 20/20 vision!!

You'll be glad you flew American, more leg room and you will need it on that long of a flight. I would be there too if I could get the time off, one of my daughters lives in L.A.

    Joshua,

There are two Indian cents,an 1865 in 65 red and an1870 in 65red from the "ALLY" collection being sold through Teletrade on Monday August 26. Are these your duplicates being sold but Teletrade is not disclosing this fact? Are there more than one coin of each date with " ALLY " on the holder?

Glad to hear you are going Shylock! You are the boards best expert on IH cents! Looking forward to hearing your report about the sets!

I believe these are both recent upgrades Stewart, as he now has both in 66 (he bought the Kamauff 1870 66RD in the LB Superior).

Looking forward to it Spooly. I've never been to a Long Beach show and if I'm ever going to make the trip this is the one. I'll take some notes, and am bringing my camera just in case I can take a shot or two. I'll talk Stewart into posing with his 1877, then focus in on the coin! Looking forward to meeting him there and learning a few things from a real expert -- I'm just an enthusiast. Hopefully I can meet Joshua at some future date back east.

Looking forward to meeting you. I am also working on exhibiting my Flying Eagle cents at a different booth from the Indian Cent " SHOWDOWN ". I'll bring my 1857 DDO and perhaps you can bring your 1857 that you just bought from Bustman via e-bay

Will do. I'll bring a couple of other coins as well, including an 1877 ICG 66RB (photosealed) I was already planning on bringing to feel out PCGS about a crossover.
  • Happy to see my original thread was so productive. My commendation to Stewart for getting the Showdown to happen. I'm sure Shylock's camera will be working overtime.
