It's beautiful. I've always been fond of this coin. I've never seen a proof in person, but one of the first coins I owned as a kid was a 1893 MS coin my grandfather saved and gave me. I still have it, and it is toned yellow/gold. Maybe the hav-a-tampa box it spent years in was high-sulphur. I wonder if the proofs were given to dignitaries visiting the fair?

That tall ship on the back sure looks nice against a mirror field. The 1893 was the first comm I ever owned, always a soft spot in my heart (and head) for that one.
That sure is a nice columbian! These are my favorite commemoratives along with the Lafayette dollar. I have some nice examples of this date but I wish I had a proof or that I could afford one. mike
Don, a Columbian was one of about nine coins my father owned, besides some IHC's, unfortunately he died in 1958 and I was unable to find out how he came to own it. The story about the proof coinage is extremely interesting.
Glassy reflectivity shimmers in the fields with golden-orange highlights drifting toward the distinctly defined denticles. The billowy mint frost that overlays the devices is the final requisite of the noteworthy Cameo designation. A coin with extraordinary eye appeal and unsurpassable technical merits.
I gotta tell you guys that with a description like that, I could sell without pictures.
