1859 NGC MS67 IH going on the blocks

Going through Heritage's future auction highlights for Sept. Long Beach, I did a double take when this one scrolled by. I confess to being more aware of PCGS' pop #s than NGC's, and I didn't realize an MS67 existed in this date (PCGS has 10 in 66 w/none higher). As a first year issue/one year type coin it's very popular with both IH and type collectors, so you don't see the ultra high grade examples parted with very often. This one has a semi-prooflike look (as well as a slightly rotated reverse).

These are so tough I've only been able to find images of 2 others, both PCGS 66s. The first was a recent purchase shared by a IH collector. The digital color is a bit off but it's a monster coin. The second is an old Snow image of the Epstein coin. They're in that order under the new NGC image: link. All are imaged in completely different formats and I share them more for enjoyment, but feel free to compare.

  • That would be a MS65 in a PCGS holder.image

Creme dela Creme, I see there are 6 graded 66 by NGC and that is the only 67 holdered in a PCGS or NGC slab. That one, if it looks nice on the floor is going to get a monstrous price.

Bill, I bet it brings more than your 67Penna quarter even in an NGC slab.image

    Paul,

Your ranger-like tracking abilities of IH specimens astound me. I know that many specialists track key specimens, and I can track many of the special Seated Dollars that float my way, but what you do is quite difficult for anyone else to match!

I don't pursue IH's these days, but please keep the online educational process going!

    Best regards,

    EVP
