what's the deal with "restocking fees"

starting to see more auctions where these bogus fees are being tagged on to returns. so i pay 1500 bucks for what's supposed to be a nice coin, it's overgraded crap, i send it back and for my trouble i get to pay 150 bucks so the guy can put it back on a shelf. i dunno.

i like the guy that says everything he's got is an upgrade candidate, pq+++++, but he doesn't want any "tire kickers" so he charges a 30 buck "restocking fee." if i had pq+++++ coins i don't think i'd be that afraid of having them returned.

in fact, if they were so nice i would think i'd be right pleased to see them again.

but that's just me.

    You can do two things:

    1) Go into the auction ASSUMING you have to pay the fee.

    2) Simply don't bid on an auction with a restocking fee.

    I do the latter.

  • I have a return fee for items that are returned BUT that fee is completely waived if the buyer has paid with a check, as opposed to using a credit card. (My credit card company charges me 2.6% of the charge even if the sale does not go through.)

That's just me. There may be some people who sell crap, and my suspicions are that the buyers find it easy to return crap. Those sellers are possibly trying to provide an incentive to not return the crap.

My strategy is to sell stunners that mesmerize the buyers. Buyers have a hard time returning stunners.
