The Power of the Forum.....maybe?

With all the negative talk about Grade & Trade (right or wrong), it may have begun to sway the E-Bay bidding.

A 1954 Topps #250 Ted Williams PSA 6 sold for $886.00 on Sunday (SMR $435). It was sold by TayCards, and bought by an E-Bay regular. Now, tonight another 1954 Topps #250 Ted Williams PSA 6 was ending and offered by Grade & Trade, and I managed to win this one for $415.15. Won by $0.91. The scan for the first auction is already down, but it didn't look much better than the Grade & Trade card (the Grade & Trade scans are not the best). Definitely not worthy of more than double!

The previous three examples on E-Bay sold for $299.31, $450.00, and $491.00.

Has anyone else seen this happening? Is this just an a fluke?

Bernie

  • I'll bet it is a fluke. Almost nothing in PSA-6 from that era should command a multiple of SMR. There are over a hundred of those, it should come up every so often and probably more than satisfy demand.

I happily bid on and win G&T auctions. If I win them for less because everyone thinks G&T is creepy, great. More money for me to spend on cards.

I think G&T is okay ..... got two cards, paid $7.50 to ship and that took over one week to arrive UPS ..... I wish they would look into another avenue for s/h

I agree with the shipping problem. My friend won a $10 card from grade and trade and had to pay $7 for shipping. At least you know before you bid.

    Bernie,

I received the package, thanks so much.

Sometimes I see "ebay-flukes" were a similar item will end on the same day, one priced much differently than another. An example was two Bonds 86TT PSA 9 cards, where both closed within seconds of each other, but the price was over 40% higher on the first.

Vintage is a COMPLETELY different animal. My point is that ebay isn't perfectly 'efficient'.

Aro, their shipping costs for both UPS or regular USPS (which is cheaper) are clearly laid out on their auction pages
so your "friend" has No one to blame but himself!

I hate it when people BID on an item that has the shipping costs
spelled out in amazing details (like G&T does)
And then LATER - AFTER THE SALE - complains that he got ripped off!

    READ THE AUCTION!
If the S&H is too high for you - do not bid!

BigKidatHeart-Perhaps you did not read my post clearly enough. I felt $7 to ship a $10 item was too high. But he knew before he bid. There was no complaining-merely agreeing that they should find a way to reduce shipping costs.

I was not complaining either - and it is not spelled out that after I pay for an auction (an hour after I got the email by the way) that a $7.50 s/h charge would mean that
    1) the item would be processed 4 days later and shipped
    2) it would take a week on the ground

I left positive feedback (I should have asked, but $7.50 to me means 2-3 day next day shipment) and may not bid again

I called G/T to ask, and they said that others felt the same way

I have been pleased by the quality of G & T cards, but agree about the service. After paying with Paypal, it has taken 14 days for my cards to arrive. Considering the fees they charge, that's too long.

  • I have had all of my cards shipped from grade and trade for $3. No insurance, but they package very well, and I have received them in about 3 days from payment. No complaints here. Did they stop offering the $3 option? If not, why would anyone choose the $7.50 option for a $10 card?

Buckwheat-Great point. I just checked and they still have the $3 option. I am guessing that when he got the invoice they automatically added the $7.50 which they do on their payment details but clearly he could have asked at that point for the $3 shipping.
