ANA Auctions...Who attended...wadaya think?

What do forum members think of the 3 main ANA auctions? I attended, bought a few great coins, was underbidder on a couple others. Fresh high end material brought very strong prices IMHO....some incredible. High graded/priced dipped and "reruns" went unsold as usual. Killer commems, original type coins, and the low pop. items especially strong ...old news except for increasing prices. Who else enjoyed? K

I viewed the coins in the Bowers sale and thought the overall quality was surprisingly low. Not a single Morgan was worth mentioning. There were no liberty seated half dollars of interest. The pattern offering was extensive but of average quality. The liberty nickels were awful. I must say some of the liberty standing quarters were nice, especially several that had colorful toning. Also, a barber half, 1905-s I believe, had wonderful toning but was marred by facial marks. I was disappointed.

Perhaps the most striking coin I saw was Anaconda's 1834 proof 67 quarter. It was gorgeous, although a grade of PR66 would have been appropriate -- a '67 coin shouldn't have any hairlines. But, that coin did not sell. (You can still acquire it from Adrian for only $175,000 or so.)

GT....agree . The Bowers auction was sad. The only coins I really liked were the pattern commems and a single early dime. I believe Anaconda's 25c. was in the Superior auction...I purchased a bust 25c just prior to its non-sale. K
  • Amazed by how many coins didn't 'sell' or went to the book in the B&M sale??? Few great buys such as the 1836 Proof set at $400,000. Incredible multiples for coins with eye appeal for example two 1930-S quarters in PCGS 66 one very pretty the other nice - pretty coin sells for about $6k the nice coin for fifteen hundred [rough estimates by memory]. Rare date gold much higher than anticipated.
    Collect for enjoyment
  • I attended all three auctions and thought the Superior sale was the best with the Bowers sale right behind it. There were some nice Gobrecht dollar buys among many opportunities and the cc gold in the Bowers sale was certainly a great collection! Like any auction, there may not be something for everybody, but with three sales in a little over a week, I found a number of opportunities!

I had a chance to see some lots from B&M and Superior sale.
I didn't see much coins, but nicely toned coins brought strong bids.
This coin is from B&M and the hammer price was $4830, but it was a $3335 coin last year. I thought it was a very pretty coin in person, but I didn't like the series of contact marks below the letter AMERICA. Has anyone seen this coin in person?
I also saw some nicely seated half dimes from Superior sale and I had a dealer bid on them. I thought my bids were strong enough, but I didn't get those coins.

NIC: You're right, of course, I should have referred to the Superior sale, not Bowers, for all the pieces I viewed in person. I read the Bowers catalogue, but couldn't find anything of interest that I thought was worth viewing. However, the 1882 dime pictured above does look nice.

I looked at all the Morgans in the Superior Sale and would have looked at others except that I had a splitting headache.

I also attended the sale on Friday to try to snag a few of the nicely toned Morgans. I hardly bid on any as they all went for much higher prices than I thought they were worth. It continues to amaze me that certain coins are bringing such strong prices at auction but are often overlooked while on the bourse floor. In fact, I think I'll post a thread to that effect!
