Question about storage tubes

I have some of the square tubes that are the cloudy white type, and some round clear ones with the screw top. Which are better and how do I tell if they contain PVC?

I am pretty sure PolyVinyl Chloride is-was only used in the flips.

The cloudy ones are probably polyurethane and the clear ones with screw tops are probably polystyrene. Neither of which are guilty of causing the problems associated with soft vinyl flips.

The reason I asked the question, I had a roll of 64-D BU Kennedy's in my bank deposit box for about ten years. They were in the square type tube they were in when I bought them. After ten years a lot of them had a greenish film on them. What does PVC damage look like anyway?

A film, usually green, left on a coin after storage in flips that contain PVC. During the early stage, this film may be clear and sticky
  • On several occasions I've had to pry old clear tubes off some hapless roll of coins. The plastic in the tubes deteriorated and shrunk, leaving the coins tightly trapped in a gooey mess.

But I'm sure there are and have been many materials used to make them.

Currently I use the Colella "square" tubes (white or various colors), and haven't had any problems. Haven't used them for 10 years, either, though. image
