Mr. Mint Bobble Head

image

Yes I got a "Mr Mint" Bobble Head Doll.

I had to laugh when he was telling the story about how he and Reggie Jackson went out to lunch one day and Reggie told him the best way to sign 500 autographs a day without having you hand hurt.

By the way, I wasn't laughing because the story was funny.

Were these given out for free? I hope so ....

I have heard of this guy, but it seems that some people have a distaste for him ... is that somewhat true?

If they gave out 500 Bobble Heads each of the 4 days, then what amazes me is why there aren't 2,000 of these listed on eBay right now? I too would try to get whatever I could for these pieces of .......

  • I was thinking about having Bobble Head executions at HIGH NOON each day at my table with a '98 Sammy Sosa Game Used Bat, but I figured it might cause more friction...
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?
  • Too bad Bill Veeck is gone. The White Sox could have a "Mr. Mint" bobblehead demolition night. I think that would bring out a huge crowd!

What is it about this guy? Is he obnoxious, snooty, self-righteous, card-god, all of the above? Just curious .....

  • Yes, yes, yes, maybe a trimmed card-god.
  • Oops, I thought for a moment there you were talking about Alan Hager.

Who else sees the redundancy in "Mr Mint" and "Bobble Head"?

So full of action, my name should be a verb.

hench1-The same adjectives and adverbs can be used to accurately describe Mr. Mint and Mr. Hager. Funny, how they seem so opposite when it comes to cards and yet they are so similar.

1420 Sports-Alan Hager was a coin dealer who created (I think) grading for coins. Upon nearly ruining that hobby and overgrading and encapsulating fake coins he turned to sportscards in the late 1980's. He created the first grading company ASA and originally it competed with SBC. Hager patented the holder and sold the rights to grading companies. Among the first few to buy the rights to the companies were ASA Canada, CSA and PSA. Hager had two or three auctions each year selling mostly ASA slabbed cards. At this time he published a colourful book about baseball cards with hugely inflated prices. His book, though filled with nice pictures of tough to find cards was full of errors and outright lies. Although Hager's idea for the grading companies was good his execution was terrible. He overgraded, and trimmed his own cards. His business was exposed as a fraud by Dennis Purdy in the Vintage and Classic Baseball Collectors Magazine in 1997. He still is on ebay as AHCollectibles (or something like that) but has virtually no national exposure. Once he was exposed, however, grading companies started cropping up everywhere.
Hager also appeared in Ken Burns baseball video, throwing down some slabbed cards of pre-war Hall of Famers. BTW-Because of his reputation as a shady dealer great prices were had on his PSA cards that appeared in his auctions.

Your Hager story is right on the money. By the way, does Purdy still put out that vintage magazine? I don't see it at the stores anymore.

I actually read Mr. mint's book. It was quite interesting how he foresaw the demand for high grade cards and paid very high prices for them very early on. He definitely threw his opinions around like they were the gospel. He had some really good points. One I disagree with was he hated the idea of graded/slabbed cards. His book was published in 93 (I think)..... He stated that graded cards would ruin the industry, I think it helped educate collector's so they wouldn't be taken advantage of by certain dealers.

In the most recent SCD he is quoted that the internet and eBay are the devil's of the industry. I couldn't believe this guy was whining about how he and numerous dealers across the country were being pinched by eBay. He said that there are very few Hobby stores that have survived compared to the number just 10 years ago. I look at it as people who know how to run a business and adapt to change will be successful. The dealers that still have stores to this day do very well and run a tight ship. Industries change and if you don't recognize the changes that must be made you will go the way of the 8-track..... I say don't complain and whine, reinvent yourself and embrace the internet...Unfortunately too many dealers are not recognizing that the internet is the future of collecting and are blaming it for destroying their business. My girlfriend said to me in our very 1st conversation "There are victims and there are Volunteers" I am going to marry her.
