Question on submitting coins

I have read on the boards here a couple of times that people can submit proof sets in their original package to PCGS and they will crack the coins out. Can the same be done for uncirculated sets?

I really don't know, however, if no one comes forward to tell you then you might send someone at PCGS an email asking them or give them a phone call. Many folks will tell you that customer service is terrible at PCGS but I have found them to be quite receptive. Perhaps I am lucky, perhaps it is the questions or comments I have, perhaps it is how I ask them or state them. Most likely it is all of them plus some other reasons. When you find out please let us know.

  • I'm not sure why you'd want to submit an entire uncirculated set -- surely you can find at least a couple coins that ain't worth it?

I have submitted individual coins still in the mint cello, particularly when I want to lend credibility to interesting toned coins (just my pet theory, but so far I'm batting 1.000 image). I cut the coins out while leaving the mint sealed edges intact, then stick them it in the usual 2.5" flip.
  • I emailed PCGS about sending my 1966 sms in for grading and leaving it in the original plastic case, they emailed me back and said i could send it in that way, no problem.
