Mercury fans help! 1942/1-D

Ok, I have every Merc that I'm aware of now having picked up a nice looking 42/1-d finally via eBay.

The only problem is I used my handy magnifying glass and I cannot see the "1". On my 42/1 (non-d) I can see it with the naked eye.

It IS in a PCI holder so my guess is it's legit, but is it?

Any help from someone who knows Mercuries would be appreciated.

the D mint one is not as easily seen as the P mint.

I think there is a just little bit of the 1 just above the 2 and a tad below

I don't have mine handy or I'd look for sure
  • goose,

That's what I figured, but for the life of me I cannot see any evidence of a 1 and that includes inspection via a Magnifying glass.

The 2 does appear a little bit "dark" below it as if it were a double-die but I don't see anything.

I'm worried as its a five hundred dollar coin or a 40 cent coin image

it doesn't show much (at least on my VF35)

just a little bump (for lack of a better term) above and below the 2 towards the left side of the 2.

buy the cherrypicker book and check it out.

The overdate should be very easy to see. Here's a picture of mine. mikeimage

darktone's picture is of the P-mint overdate. As goose3 said, the D-mint version is nowhere near as obvious. Look at the left side of the base of the 2, and a tiny nub of bottom of the 1 should be sticking out below it.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

My mistake I thought you were talking about the P mint. I will see if I can find a picture of the D mint. mike image
  • You really need a microscope to see the doubling on the 42/1D. I have a 42/1 D and I could not see it either. I sent it in to pcgs to get graded. I was sweatin bullets until it came back as a true 42/1D

Here are 3 pictures of what you should look for. Doubling on the Date and Motto and a Repunched D Mint mark. Hope these are big enough and will help you.
