Thought I'd throw my topic in the heap too. I've been lurking for a few weeks now. I'm new to the hobby and jumped right in. I've read several books, watched the Heritage Live Auction and researched the minting process, grading, history, etc. After all that, this board is my favorite resource. Thanks for your help and sharing your stories. I intend to pass my experiences on to those that follow.
I've decided to collect slabbed SAE proofs because 1) I have zero hands-on grading experience 2) they are in my budget 3) they are accessible and 4) I think they're pretty darn neato looking. I know they're speculative, but refer to reason #4. I am building a nice collection complete with original mint packaging.
I also like die strike errors because I believe we learn the most from our mistakes.
Here is what I've learned from you so far:
* Don't clean my coins.
* Moderns are speculative.
* Sellers will cancel their auctions at the last second (already happened to me too).
* My Sacs from the post office are worth about $1 cash.
* Hobby first, investing second, unless speaking to my wife.
* I can hammer my PR67-69s, send them to ICG, get 70's back and make a small fortune on ebay.
Actually, I don't have enough personal experience to compare grading companies, but I've decided to stick with PCGS grades for now since they appear to be a bit stricter. I thought CU / PCGS would appreciate knowing.
On a personal front, I built a 5 y.o. web design business in Austin. My handle on ebay is lt.dan! and I'm sure I've chatted / bought from a few folks here.
That's it. I love you all. <b>And thanks</b> to Coin Universe for providing this forum.

Boy, you have learned fast!
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
We need a holding area for you people.Lets put em all in quarintine for awhile you guys.
Welcome aboard Shannon from a fellow Texan.

If only more collectors did that.
The Ludlow Brilliant Collection (1938-64)
SAEs are cool. I dumped most of my moderns but still have my 1986 BU and 1987 proof. Great looking coins.
NOTE: No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Also, HTML tags here use [ and ] instead of < and > so [B ] is bold (no space) and [/b ] (no space) is un-bold
