ICG overgrades moderns

BBNBBN Posts: 3,761 ✭✭✭
I am a Kennedy collector also and I've noticed that ICG will slap a 70 on a slab in a heartbeat. ON ebay there are always a few ICG 70s for JFKs and rarely any PCGS or NGC 70s

It's funny, they are pretty decent on older stuff that I have seen, but I agree, they are sometimes way off on moderns. I have a 72 Lincoln ICG MS67 Red that has several bad cuts on the face. No way is it a 67. Of course, I am not an expert grader, just my opinion. To be fair, I have a Lincoln matte proof in an ICG holder that I am quite happy with. md

  • That's a general rule for any coins graded by ICG after 1950. If ICG grades it MS or PR70, 95% of the time it would be a MS or PR69 in a PCGS slab. Just keep that in mind when you purchase modern ICG coins.

I used to think that you should knock 1-2 grades off an ICG coin to get the grade NGC/PCGS would have given the coin. The more stuff I see graded by them I'm not starting to think that you should knock 3-5 grades off and/or assume the coin has some sort of problem.

ICG SUCKS!!! Not just on moderns, but on all coins.

I agree with you gm, ICG is a notch above ACG and PCIgold. I have a Roosevelt in ICG 66, that would be a PCGS/NGC 64 on a good day, more likely a 63.

  • I disagree, I still think ICG is a very good company when it comes to classic coins. As far as moderns go just take the ICG grade take two (sometimes three) points off, and that's the PCGS grade.

ICG is the only way I could ever afford a ms 70. So I ain't say anything about it.

ICG MS68 1957 Roosevelt sold for $9.95 on eBay not too long ago.
    That about covers it.

  • it's funny how everyone is basically saying PCGS is 'they' grading company. Statements like, "A ICG MS68 is a MS65" in a PCGS holder. Has anyone actually said, a ICG MS68 is actually a MS65?

I like ICG holders, but their modern grading is a little loose I will say.

  • I just say it's a PCGS 65 because when PCGS grades a coin MS65 most of the time it is a MS65. Also I say PCGS 65 because it gives people something to relate to.

I've got an ICG ms66 39s washington going out this weekend cracked out just to see how far off they are, btw I paid 63 money for it. Also sending in a DMPL morgan in a green PCI slab to see what it grades.

Maccoin, I've got lots of MS70s. What coin do you want in MS70? I'll give you a GREAT price in it. All the coins are graded by myself and sealed in a 2x2 with a secure staple.

So basically ICG grading is OK if you use their grading system? Kind of like that ICG MS68 is nice, I'll give you PCGS/NGC MS63 money for it?

ICG overgrades. I've seen enough to know. They are overgraders on the same level as ACG.

I don't know much about moderns since that's not my area of specialty, but I do know classic gold pretty well, and I think ICG does a pretty darn good job. I view them on gold as equal to NGC and before PCGS issued the unofficial MS-65 on the 33, just below PCGS. After that fiasco, I think they are more conservative than PCGS in what I collect.
  • maybe ICG grades more on a technical basis?
