Is this a bad dip job?

Well, first of all... I'm going to be sending an email to the seller on this one. Here's the claim they made on eBay:

"1981-S PR69 DEEP CAMEO PCGS TYPE 1 KENNEDY HALVE DOLLAR. EXCELLENT DETAIL, EXCELLENT CONDITION. BRIGHT WHITE. NO MARKS OR HAZE. MIRROR LIKE SURFACE. VERY STRONG CAMEO. A VERY BEAUTIFUL COIN."

What a crock. If I end up having to eat this one... no biggie. They certainly won't be getting any more of my business. Even if they refund or replace, I shouldn't have to deal with that crap just to get what was advertised.

It may not be obvious from the scan, but this JFK has a finger print that practically covers the obverse, with traces of it on the reverse. You can't see the fields too well in the scan, but they're splattered with that brown crap, and the fingerprint.

Does this look like it was improperly rinsed after a dip, and it started to show after it was slabbed? I don't think it could get slabbed PR69 DCAM looking like this.

Yes, that's what it looks like. Copper-nickel clad proofs are very difficult to dip with good results.

Hey it's got rare and desirable textile tone! Didn't you know Proof JFKs were stored in a mint sack? BRIGHT WHITE? Ha! Bad dip.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Yep, that's a bad dip. I deliberately created several during testing.

    Clark,

Please tell me the seller isn't centman2.

Oh crap, it is centman2. I've been looking to replace my 1988 coins because both are hazed around the obverse periphery, so I just grabbed one from him today. Good thing he has a return policy.

  • Russ,

I'd like to tell you that... but, I'd be lying. Is there a history here that I should know about?

BTW, I also got a 1999 from him, and it looks good.

    Clark,

Nope, no history. I just recognized the auction description you quoted as very similar to the description in the auction for the coin I bought today. According to his About Me page, he has a 30 day return policy and his feedback is good, so I took a shot.

Yes it looks like a bad dip job but I don't think those are fingerprints the toning lines are straight not curved. I t looks more like textile lines from a cloth that was used to dry the coin after an incomplete rinsing that left traces of dip on the coin. The dark spots in the lines have a definite look like the remains of a dried droplet.

I wonder if that means they'll swap it for the one they advertised.

  • Well, there is another mystery solved. I had a clad 198? MS Kennedy that I bought for a buck and it ended up with brown splotchy patches on it after a few months similar to the coin in this thread. I knew it wasn't the storage because no other coins were affected. I replced it ad spent it, IIRC.
Time sure flies when you don't know what you are doing...

Well, I got the 1988 in from this guy today. Also listed as "NO MARKS OR HAZE".

It has exactly the same periphery haze as the other two I already own. I guess this must be a recurring problem on these. Sent an eMail off to him, waiting to here back.

Fortunately, I also got one in from L&C Coins today that is haze-free so at least I can replace the coin in Set #1.

Russ - After looking at the picture of your coin, could we refer to you from now on as the King of Haze. image
