Thinking about a giveaway

moursundmoursund Posts: 3,207 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm thinking about giving away a few coins...

Nothing real exotic, maybe a peace dollar, morgan, a couple of VF walkers and some circ mercs or something.

But I think I'd rather them go to somebody who could really use them.

So, give me suggestions for a giveaway, such that the winner would be

1. a "good" member of these forums,
2. somebody who really could use some relatively inexpensive coins

Should I take nominations? Accept essays (25 words or less, "why I want your coins"), what?

  • How about I am recently married and just bought a fixeruper house and have no money to spare for coins until I buy a stove, fridge, dishwasher, deep freeze, central heat, 35 gallons of paint, 30 sheets of drywall, 1000 feet of electrical wiring, etc, etc. Looks like I won't be getting a coin for a while. I think that story is worth a VF walker and a Morgan. As a new collector it will keep from falling out of the hobby until I get things fixed up. Nothing like a walker and a morgan to keep me warm at night. image
  • How about a good old fashioned "Guess the date"?
    Closest wins.

Not all of them just one coin in the bunch. Maybe a
mint mark for a tie breaker. You can choose a lot
of dates among Mercs,Walkers and Morgans.

note: great idea. I think I'll do one too if this flies.

I don't mind a "guess the date" contest, but what I don't want is for somebody to win it who already collects proof double eagles, bids in heritage auctions, and has an annual coin budget greater than my net worth...

Somebody like that would look at my coins, sneer in satsified distain, and toss them in the junk silver vault. image

So I'll try to find some way for my coins to go to somebody who they would mean more to. I'll probably do a giveaway to commemorate my 1000th post, which will be coming up sometime soon. image

IndianHeadMan, are you me? am I you? If you look in the mirror, do you see me? If I look in the mirror, Do I see you?
I just got married, have a child who is 6 months old as of Monday... bought a fix-me-upper.... Between the roof, the windows, refinishing the living room and refinishing the baby room, I'M BROKE!

I actually upgraded to 200 amp service but need to get rid of that old black wiring, the black mold in the downstairs bathroom, fix the water damage on the back wall of the house.... Need to take down the bricks on the attached garage as they are falling down anyway... :-)

The house was built in 1952 and I think we have the original furnace. Had I known what I know now... I would have moved to Florida!

    Let's split the coins!

  • I hear ya dakra. I have to rewire my house too. I expected such since I got the place at a bargin. I always liked old copper but not this kind. image I'll probably by more coper wire the next few days than I will ever buy in indians.

It's going to be awhile before we get to by any good stuff.

PS-- turn you PM on so I can PM you instead of taking up forum space.
  • Shoot....... It's simple for me.
I am trying to collect Morgans and can only afford the lower priced range...... No house to fix-up so I guess I don't have a hard luck story..... except I can't afford the coins I would like.

The 1000'th post giveaway! That's a good idea. I've got that coming up myself in a month or two. I think I'll dig something up. Sniper contests are fun, closest to a give event wins

You could say the entrants have to have been registered here for at least three months (to ensure it is a "regular"), and they cannot have spent more than a certain dollar amount on their entire collection (honor system, I know).

Requiring nominations might keep a lot of people (who might not be frequent posters) from getting a chance because no one knows them to nominate them.

You could just ask them to write a post about why they would want the coins.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • A little violin music,please.
  • I have a good one.... My wife an d I used to live in Dillon CO. We bought a house here in Ohio at an auction (inside sight unseen!). When we finally made the move out here and saw the house...WOW!!! The house was built in 1942 by a guy who never owned a level or square, and from what I understand, insulation was more expensive than heating oil. Oh the stories I have...
  • You could say that the winner has to send you a picture of themself and the coin in 6 months.image

Seriously, I think Kranky's idea of someone being around for a while is a good one. Also, I think if you clearly state what the coins are then high end collectors probably wouldn't be interested anyway. So you could have an honor system of someone who doesn't have them but could say why they want them.
Small cents - ain't they beautiful!
  • to keep the spirit alive so all newbies and people who auctually would enjoy the coins you gave away. it is simple ....lets say you gave away a morgan and a walker (2 coins) follow me now image then the person that receives those to coins has to inturn give away 2 other coins from his modest stash of low grade silver, nickle ,penny stash , now this will asure that only people that need the coins want them and it is fun as well because it is progressive. the big wheels wont participate but enjoy watching the post of newbies and needies receiving coins somewhat for free...the old saying 1 mans junk is another mans treasure...or am i on drugs?? what do you guys think?
