1970 Topps Supers

I got a great deal on some nice ones and I've been trying for two years to get them graded. PSA won't grade them because they are too thick (1/16").

Does anyone else collect these, or am I the only guy in the world who wants to grade these things?

  • Bruce- I believe there was an auction about a month ago on eBay for 3 '70 Topps Supers in PSA 9, so I know that PSA grades them, although there aren't alot of graded examples out there. I believe there was a Rose and a Clemente among the 3 that were sold.
  • You are right, there are some in the pop report. I didn't even look. I checked eBay and saw nothing except a keyword spammer.

    Woo hoo.

I'm going to send some in (again) and see what kind of incredible disaster ensues.

  • Sorry Bruce,

We do not grade that issue. They are too thick to fit in our holders at this time.

I do not know why we have some in the pop. I will check on that.

  • Ah, sorry. I just called, but I hadn't seen your post before I called, or I wouldn't have called.

These cards have been in twice already. Both times I was told to send them in. Today I called twice, and both of those times I was told to send them in, despite my having given your support person a pretty serious grilling about this. The one I just spoke to might need to take the rest of the day off.

You need to go to a card shop, find a '70 Topps Super, write on it, "'70 TOPPS SUPER: WE DON'T GRADE THESE", and pin it to the wall, so this won't happen again :-)

I don't know if you have any plans to grade these, but I've had this brick ready to go for about two years. They are in great shape, and I want to get them graded and sell some of them for infinite money.

Are they much different than the '71 Supers? I know PSA grades those.
  • They are tall-boys, they have rounded corners, and they are 1/16" thick. The latter characteristic is what nails them.

I remember seeing the same auction for the Rose and Clemente Supers that were graded. Is is the case that these are no longer graded, or is the clam that they were never graded?

  • Charlie said he didn't know why there were cards in the pop report.

It's possible that they were graded in semi-rigids, which I believe they used to do for issues that they couldn't holder.

Here is a 1970 Topps Super graded PSA 9 MINT that has hit Ebay. Any information on this from the 1970/1971 Topps Supers afficianados?

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • That is in a slab, for those who don't want to look.

    Bruce,
Update us when you find out. I have a complete set of 1970 FB Supers that I would have graded but
I was told they do not grade them either.
    Thanks.

    Loves me some shiny!

I purchased the three that were on Ebay last month. A Gibson, Rose and Clemente in all PSA 9's. I like the cards and think they are underpriced.

  • I think you snagged the only PSA-graded ones that we are likely to see for a while. I spoke with Charlie again, and for sure no way are they grading these now.
