EGAD! 71-S Sil

Someone got a nice price

Was this one that much better than the others?
Can't say as if I've seen any myself, but I have
ben looking. I thought these were around $300.00

  • $3-400 would be a low to mid-range example. I have seen high-end examples bring as much as this piece in the last several months.

Is this really a 67? Look at the bag marks behind the head and below the neck.

Looks over graded to me. The gouge by the lip is awful. Maybe the scan doesn't
    do it justice.

I couldn't tell if those spots at BER were on the coin or not.

    Drizzit,

I wouldn't be suprised if the owner bought it back. I watched Teletrade closely for a number of years and saw this happen over and over again. Once the owner got the price realized above current levels, (auction price information Teletrade provided to buyers, when available) they would sell it in a future auction, hopefully at a higher price.

Teletrade used to use prices realized from their auctions from the previous two years, to give buyers an idea of what coins might/should go for.

I'm not saying this is what happened in this case. But, if you watch, you may see this same coin again in a few weeks.

Dam- Excellent point! The mark on the mouth (just to the right), the flashing in the right field (to the left of the "Y" and the reeding mark right of the center of the head (in the field) make this one an average MS67 IMO.
Nice strike and apparent luster though.
    Are these really that tough?
I know the MS68 1976's are, but I've seen a few of these 71-S in 66 showing up lately.

The coin looked over graded by a point to me for the reasons mentioned. Of course the TT comment said one of the best he's ever seen. So maybe it looks better in person. My guess is that the seller bought it back.

In terms of pricing, I think $300 is way too low for an average 67. My feeling is that they should start at $400 to $500 if you get lucky and go up from there. I paid about $850 for mine, a lovely toned high-end beauty. Before I bought my current piece I had a high end blast white piece which I had no problem selling as a dup for $700 with one phone call. Prices may have come down some, but only if someone makes a mistake can you get anything for $300.

Of course Dbldie would only pay $1. Then again he hasn't been able to get a 67. Then again he doesn't want one!

O.K., I seem to be in dreamland on most of my prices I guess.

But this Teletrade thing is starting to sound like what happened
to card prices in the mid-eighties. The price guide was supposed to
be from a number of different dealers country wide, but it turns out
they were trading cards back and forth to manipulate the prices.

Hey! Where were you when my auction ended a few days ago! image

I believe if the consignor buys it back from TeleTrade, it will show the price during bidding but won't show up as a price realized. But, it would be trivial to have your buddy buy/return it to establish a bogus price for the next time around, and I've wondered if that happens sometimes. I doubt it on this coin, not enough money in it to play that game.
  • Supercoin,

If the seller places a "reserve" bid ahead of time and keeps the coin, he is charged a seller's fee, but no sale is listed on the piece. If the seller actively bids in the auction and wins the coin, he is charged buyer and seller fees, and a "legitimate" sale is recorded.
