15.48 coins per pound of silver. A pound of silver is 12 troy ounces.

40% silver halves contain 0.14792 oz. of silver, or 6.76 40% halves per ounce. A war nickel has 0.05626 oz. so it would take 17.77 of them for an ounce. It's easiest to just calculate the silver value of a dollar's face in silver, always remembering that a silver dollar contains more silver than $1 in smaller denominations. They even quote that price every day in the Wall Street Journal. Today's price was $3.542 (they quote it per $1,000 face as $3,542).
