PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The Portland Trail Blazers and San Antonio Spurs swapped backup guards Monday, with the Blazers acquiring Antonio Daniels and Charles Smith along with center Amal McCaskill and San Antonio receiving Erick Barkley and Steve Kerr.
Portland also sent the 2003 second round draft pick acquired last year when the Blazers traded Steve Smith to San Antonio for Kerr and Derek Anderson.
Daniels, the fourth pick of the 1997 pick by the then-Vancouver Grizzlies, averaged 9.2 points and 2.8 assists last year for the Spurs. The 6-foot-4, four-year veteran started 13 games and has a career average of 7.3 points and 3.4 assists.
Smith, the 26th pick of the 1997 draft, played in just 60 games -- 22 starts -- and averaged 7.4 points. Smith, 6-4, will be playing for his fourth NBA team. He was drafted by Miami and traded during his rookie year to the Los Angeles Clippers.
After stints in the CBA and with a pro team in Italy, Smith signed with the Spurs last offseason.
McCaskill, a 6-11 center, played in only 27 games for the Spurs last season, and has played in just 44 NBA games since being drafted in 1996.
Barkley, the 28th pick of the 2000 draft following his sophomore season at St. John's, has played sparingly for the Blazers in two seasons. The 6-1 point guard has career totals of 2.9 points and 1.5 assists in 27 games.
Kerr is a 14-year NBA veteran, and spent three seasons with the Spurs prior to being traded last offseason, winning one of his four championships there in 1999. He is the NBA's career leader in 3-point field goal percentage at 45.9 percent. Kerr averaged 4.1 points in 65 games with the Blazers last year.

<< <i>It was a good trade as both players are in the last year of their contracts and will free up money for next year. Steve is very welcome here, and Antonio will be better off in Portland where he will get more playing time. Speedy Claxton will fit in better for us. >>
Spurs will have even more money since this is also David Robinson's last year.
gregmadduxfan- Thought everyone knew I was from San Antonio, lol. Didn't know you were too, kool!
