Guess you have to take into account the titanium alloy used in the 1856 cent planchet that prevented that puppy from getting even partially struck up! That's not really wear - it's been used as a driver a couple of times which flattened it out a bit. But the good news is that it cured my hook! image

both coins reside in PCGS EF40 holders.
The first coin WAS an ANACS AU55!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I feel pretty darn close to being properly graded (certainly NOT 15pts off). I think the second coin is every bit of an ef45.

IMHO I gave the top one AU53 and the bottom EF40. BTW,I was useing the PCGS Gradeing and counterfeit detection book.imageimage

I think they got them correct, although I would have been a bit more generous, personally. The second coin suffers more from a weak strike towards the head, than anything else. The tail feathers on that coin are still well defined. The top piece is probably choice, but I think this may be a case of pcgs "net" grading a coin, without bagging it. See all the crud in the devices? My opinion on that end of it.

Goose3 did you crack the anacs au55 one out before sending it or did you "cross" it?
  • goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭

The more I look at them the more they seem equal in grade. Both just have that EF look. Add a little luster to the first coin and you have an AU. Both really nice original coins.
