Proof Jeff '39 rev of '40 for $5 grand?

I was watching this lot on eBay. It looks to me like a floor bidder at the Superior auction paid well over 5 grand for this coin. Did it really sell for that?

I hope the buyer wasn't hoping to place it in a registry set, there is no place for one now, at least not until PCGS posts a w/ varieties proof Jeff set...

Mine doesn't have any spots image If they are really worth that much then I've hit a home run. I bought one in a NGC holder and crossed it successfully. I paid a lot less for mine image A whole lot less image

I believe the coin sold for $5600 not sure if that includes the 15% buyers premium. I agree with your comments about the coin.

The other Jefferson I was watching was the 1965 SMS MS67DCAM (pop 1). This coin sold for $3900. It looked like a solid DCAM and went cheap compared to the 1939. I tried to bid on this coin but could not get registered at the last minute.

  • I was watching that one too but wasn't a bidder. I didn't mention that one because I didn't think it was all that outragously priced. A DCAM 1965 is much harder than the '67s. Too bad you couldn't get registered quickly!

    Carl,

I too was watching the Superior auction. And have been watching other auctions as well. It seems the market is very strong right now. I imagine because of the weak stock market. (I wish I had purchased coins instead of stocks over the past 4 years image . I'd be a whole lot better off. And have an additional complete set or two.)

As a collector, I'm hoping it slows down soon. On the other hand, I've considered selling too. It's all about timing and this might be the time.

  • I bought a PCGS PR66 39 rev 40 about 2 years ago and it got lost in the mail image

Since then, this coin has eluded me and at those kind of prices, it will continue to do so.

I do have a couple of the 40 rev 38 PCGS Proof coins if anyone wants to make a trade!

  • I think all in all that Jeffersons have low mintage numbers and are quite rare in many dates and grades....a step child of collecting is now becoming a nice item. Jefferson the man and Jefferson the coin are both really nice. I have a '59-p ms66 with a pop 4/0......got it for $15.00......try that with a Morgan. Nickels never became clad coins..... always pure mixed alloys......

    Enjoy your coins.........

Anyone need one of these in a PCGS PF66 holder, with a shot at 67???

I'd be willing to sell one less than the Heritage coin!!!

    Send me a PM.

Also have a 40 reverse of 38 in an old holder (Not labeled, but it is a rev 38) in PCGS PF66.

I can't send a scan, but I'll bakc up the coin.
