Large cent question.

I have a 1837 large cent (head of 38) in a ngc holder marked N-12.
What does the N-12 mean?

  • Placid,

If you can get hold of a bood by Howard R. Newcomb, it lists a long paragraph of specifications of determining the die for the 1837 cent. This is his designation for that coin "N-12" Obverse and Reverse... exactly where the letters are positioned, big or small, closed or open that sort of description...image

    Thanks Kejun99

    I found this online.

    1837 LARGE CENT - NEWCOMB 12
    Rarity: Scarce

    Variety Equivalents: Breen 1868

    Notes:
This is one of the more popular Large Cent varieties because of a stray E that was punched into the leaves of the wreath beneath the E of AMERICA on the reverse.

No Proofs are known of this variety.

This was the only use of the obverse and reverse dies.

    Sounds good if it's correct.

I looked at mine and the E in Cents is dropped low into the wreath. All the letters in one cent are really doubled too Hmm...

    Kejun99 I sent you a pm.

None of the pictures on the web site above for the 1837's match.
Maybe I have a yet unkown variety?
