1966 SMS Kennedy with vertical micro numbers stamped into coin???

OK you Kennedy experts----what is this. Sorry--I don't know how to attach file but I can email scan to anyone that can help me.The numbers run vertical starting between WE TRUST and runs down to the date.Could also be letters and numbers. Too perfectly formed to be etched by someone playing.

They have the same spacing as the reeding.

    Reed marks.

  • I agree... reed marks
    -Ryan-
  • Dukie101 was kind enough to send me the above coin to confirm what the marks on the coin are. Without a doubt as most of you guessed they are reed marks. See pics. BOB
  • Are the marks protruding from the coin or are they indented? Also, wouldn't reeding lines be the other direction?

They are indented. It's almost an optical illusion, though. It's reed mark impressions.

    mnmcoin,
You're wrong! It can't be since they're going the other way.

  • Under a scope they look exactly like reed marks, but you are right they are going the wrong way. Go figure. Well at any rate, what ever they are from they are gouges and are not numbers or letters. Kind of interesting though as they are spaced so evenly apart as reed marks would be, but the lines are vertical not horizontal. I wonder if it got caught under a roll of halves. BOB

It's reed marks that are going the right direction. The offending coin hit this coin at an angle that's why they are deeper at the top than the bottom and it was a light hit that didn't imprint the full width of the reeds, only the portion of the reeds from the obv or the rev ½ of the rim width of the offending coin.

  • Hey Dog97,
Good call. The coin that hit it got it with the edge of the reeding and not flush. That makes sense and on further review under the scope I would say the mystery is solved. BOB
