PCGS slab BIN @ 42X sheet and not even monster toned!!

Dog97Dog97 Posts: 7,874 ✭✭✭
$220

This is a $5 coin. The most I have ever paid for this model was $24 and that was on Teletrade for a MS-67 Red and everyone knows MS67 pennies are expensive, especially ones with minor striking errors.

Don't get me wrong I'm not flaming this guy, he probably don't know anything about errors even though his "ME" page says he has been professional numismatist for over 20 years, a PCGS, NGC, and ICG authorized dealer, and a member of the American Numismatic Association for the last 20 years, also have been a past member of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) and many state and regional numismatic organizations.

Here's one that's more affordable @ 13X market value: $10 coin

Hmmmm......I wonder what his cost was??

The 1¢ is a nice one.

This one sold for $50.60 at the Heritage ny auction and that was with the juice.

    Hey Lake Placid,

Maybe you should send him a link to the thread; bring him around to reality, OR Dog97 - maybe you should link him up to the CONECA website and REALLY bring him a dose of reality.

Besides Dog97, is there something else special about his "HUGH Broadstruck" '97 cent?? image

How was it determined that the dime is a 1997P; was there some significant detail only present on the '97P?

    Hi Gil!
The only other thing special about the penny is that the planchet is split which adds about 25¢ worth of premium to the value.
You can see the P mintmark on the dime, the only thing special about it as that it is AU, must be a grade rarity as most $10 O/C dimes on eBay & Teletrade are BU.

I used to buy from him - his prices were high (about 10% - 15%) above what I thought was the usual high end, but he had some really nice stuff that was difficult to couldn't find, and I was willing to pay the"premium". Not any more - I think he's greatly over-pricing a lot of his offerings. image

dudes, y;all are yackin' about winthrop carner! the dude is a blubbering blabbering idiot. he got fired from heritage because all he did was lose money for them. pull out some of your old coins magazines and you'll find his mug in there.

if you want proof of this wacko's lunacy, all you gotta do is look at what he's bidding on on ebay. i've met him several times, and like i said, he's a fruit loop.

I've heard a lot of bad things about this seller. The comment that he is a complete assh*le is heard frequently.
  • I think Winthrop Carner is one of the NICEST, most professional numismatists I have ever met. This guy KNOWS coins and has had a great career (Stacks, Heritage, and now on his own). I have NEVER bought a bad coin from him. Every coin was not merely "pq" but SUPER pq. The guy is first class all the way.

He has some nice coins, but way over priced. I guess he only needs to sell a couple to make up for all the extra e-bay fees.

He's scared to death you're gonna steal his pictures too. Just right click on them like you're going to save them. He's disabled the right click button. Not a problem, right click them and hit ENTER at the same time and you can snag them.

  • Thanks for the tip Dog97. I hate it when some of the listings prevent you from downloading a picture. I have the pictures option turned off on my browser to reduce all of those GIF files. However, when I want to see only a part of the photos on a webpage, I right click on it. Those annoying "I saw you, you can't do that" IRK me plenty.image

  • Tried to buy one coin from him last year. He had a nice AU-58 1921 Peace Dollar that had nice eye appeal, but he wanted MS-63 money for it. He listed it three times on E-Bay. After the third time with no bid, I e-mailed him, and offered him the current Greysheet Ask on the piece.

His response was that I should contact the people who put out price guides and try to buy a coin from them.

Since then, I've noticed that most of his material is pretty poor, with most silver pieces having dark color or dipped with bad carbon spots.

Makes you wonder how he stays in business when he has 15 pages of current auctions and only 4 bids showing which are nowhere near his required reserve. You'd figure he would get the hint....
  • Ive bought a few coins from Win. I will admit his prices are on the higher side but he is one of the nicest people to deal w/ on ebay not to mention he has some GREAT quality coins. I dont know why you all gripe about how high his prices are. Go look at Lebstein or Lawerences site you'll see basically the samer higher end retail prices asked.

Ok since we are doing personal opinions of the seller now:

#1 I think Winthrop Carner is one of the NICEST, most professional numismatists I have ever met. This guy KNOWS coins and has had a great career (Stacks, Heritage, and now on his own). I have NEVER bought a bad coin from him. Every coin was not merely "pq" but SUPER pq. The guy is first class all the way.

#2 the dude is a blubbering blabbering idiot. he got fired from heritage because all he did was lose money for them.

    #3 he is a complete assh*le

#4 he is one of the nicest people to deal w/ on ebay not to mention he has some GREAT quality coins

So you either love or hate the guy?

I think he looks like a bald gorilla with overpriced errors. He seems to have some decent stuff for sale at decent prices (but not giveaways) I think his bad scans cut down on his action. I've noticed the same coins being listed 6 or 7 times but he is smart, he doesn't have to pay a reserve fee because he opens bidding high instead.
