Warren Sapp believes Michael Strahan's all-time sack record should have an asterisk next to it. Strahan, in turn, believes Sapp is a "jackass who wishes he was me," according to the New York Daily News.
"And I hope he reads that," Strahan told the newspaper on Friday from the University at Albany, where the New York Giants train. "He'll see me to my face and he'll be nice, but Warren is a jackass. So get out of the first round of the playoffs, then you can talk to me."
Last season Strahan set the NFL record for most sacks in a season with 22½. The last of those sacks was a controversial one, when it appeared Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre let him have it without any resistance.
Sapp also told the newspaper that there are other sack kings, past and present, who believe there should be an asterisk on Strahan's record, too. "If Derrick Thomas was alive, he'd have an asterisk on it," Sapp told the Daily News. "Reggie White, with his 192½ (career) sacks, has an asterisk on it. All the big boys who hunt have an asterisk on it."
Ever since he broke the record, Strahan has been upset with any implication that Favre gift-wrapped the record-breaking sack or that an asterisk should be placed with his record.
"I just don't get it," Strahan told the Daily News. "I just hope that Warren would realize he needs to worry about getting better because he's talked about going to the Super Bowl for eight or nine years and he has yet to see one. I've seen one. He can talk about getting the sack record. He didn't come close. I've got it. He's talked about all these other things he has yet to do.
"You know what? Stop talking and maybe just do it and worry about what he's got going on with his team - before I pull out the film of those guys playing the Eagles in the playoffs where he shut it down on national TV. I'm sick of a guy who ain't even the best defensive tackle in the league talking about the best defensive end in the league."
Sapp boasted last year about how he was going to make a run at Mark Gastineau's old sack record. He finished with only six, however. The Bucs made the playoffs, but were eliminated in the first round by the Philadelphia Eagles.
"Warren Sapp should worry about getting past the first round of the playoffs - that should be his main concern," Strahan's linemate, Keith Hamilton, told the newspaper
The Giants are my favorite team, I know theres not a big chance of the playoffs(unless Shockey catches 80-90 passes and Dayne is better) but they're gonna mess up some players. Remember McCaffrey last season. Hopefully they get rid of Sehorn and Collins. Then they'll be back in the playoff hunt. I like it, I like it alot!!
