71 no S Jefferson nickel

They have been deleted from the sets. Most of us have spent a lot of money for them mainly because they were part of the set. No regrets here, mine is very nice, but where do they belong ??

There seems to be little logic on what jefferson varieties made it to the weighted sets. In the circulation series 42 d/d, 45p ddr and 46 d/d - all major varieities were also left out.

I guess the simple question is - why have a variety set when not all of the major varieities (documented by Breen, Fivas & Stanton, and others) are included?

The second question why would a public company not try to stimulate submissions with more coins included in the variety set?

Past threads have referred to the red book as the primary source for the varieties. Even the red book contains most of these.

I think the 71 no-S will be in the "with varieties" set, when they get it up. But it will be the only variety in the entire Jefferson proof series, to my understanding.

  • If the ( with varieties ) set has the no S nickel, one variety??? Watch the prices tumble on that (rare) coin.

I take it from your comment that you do not consider it to be rare? I am very disappointed that it will not be included in the regular set. To make a variety set that contains a whopping one variety is idiocy. They have taken what could be an interesting series on the proof side, and reduced it to something that is not difficult to complete.

    Here is my point....
If you make a set that contains one coin....why bother weighting it? If you give the coin a weight of 10 versus 1 versus 1000, since there is only one coin in the set, the weight is irrelevant. Now you say, but it doesn't contain just one coin, it contains all the regular issue proofs as well....it still doesn't matter. Anybody who registers the variety set, will do so because they have this ONE coin needed for the set, and any basis for comparing sets will be lost, because the weight of the one coin will simply cancel from set to set.

it would seem that a good compromise would be a Jefferson variety set which would include MS and proof varieties. not a large set but an interesting one.

not to be a contrarian, but the 1971 no S isn't really a rare coin. difficult to find and perhaps scarce but not rare. it has a fairly well estimated minted population of approximately 1500 and can generally be located with a bit of diligence. my set as yet doesn't contain an example----priced a bit high for me.

i'd make an offer of $300 for that 67CAM paul, and i can hear you laughing already. i'd imagine that's about 30%-50% of what you'd hope to recieve.image

  • I am interested in proof varieties. There aren't all that many. Once you finish your set you can work on upgrades or varieties or go on to another set. I didn't want to pay the price for upgrades but have bought some varieties.

I have a nice Cam No-S with a DCAM obverse. I have the 2 reverse ofs. These were optional coins in the old set and I find them very interesting.
  • It could also be said that the 1964 SMS should be listed in the 1938-1964 variety proof sets,
along with the 1939rev40 and 1940rev38, because the 65-67 SMS coins are listed in the 1965-present
    proof sets.

  • Of course the 71 no s is not rare. I was being sacastic. The point I was trying to relate, is the mid stream rule change STINKS !!!!!!!

hey tim, i can be slow on the uptake sometimes!! best to use a smiley face to help slow-wits like me.image

maybe what's needed is a set called "The Oddball Variety Set" which could be by denomination and include each coin that PCGS can't seem to find a comfortable/logical place for. something along the lines of a discussed set that had all the SMS coins and the mint set only releases included only by denomination.
