What to do with a toned Lincoln Cent???

We have here a 1960 Proof Lincoln. It's purple (right from the cello). Can I dip it??? The flip is dusty, the coins actually looks nice. Any thoughts???image

BTW, it's not smiling...
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

i think it looks neat. why would you want to remove that?
  • Leave it as is. If you decide to get it graded...send it to NGC or else it will be bodybagged by PCGS.
Buy the coin, not the holder!

To see what is under the tone (the last PR69DCAM sold for $3300), maybe it's a DCAM???image

  • Why dip it? Wouldn't it be worth more as is?

I was wondering if you could keep these coins sealed in the cello when you find them. I'd bet you would have a better chance of getting them graded without being bagged for AT. That is if it is worth it to slab these at all.

OK Lincoln guys, I won't buy the toned Lincolns from Marty if you don't buy the toned Jeffs image

How common are these things anyway? Personally I haven't looked through many proof sets...

I have looked through plenty of proof sets (I love them) I find one Lincoln, Half, Quarter or Dime in 25 Jeffersons. Nickels seem to tone alot faster than the silver or copper. I did find one Lincoln (sent it to PCGS in the cello) that had creasant toning. Not worth much but I though it was really cool...

  • I have a Jefferson nickel in a mint set that is nice flourescent blue. I dont recall what year it is, but it is really cool looking.

  • That is funny, I thought nickel was pretty inert. That is I thought copper and silver oxidize much quicker. I know gold is very inert.

I think you could see DCAM under that tone, so it probably isn't image

Make sure to get that dust off it as soon as possible. Otherwise, it could be worth only 1 cent.

MS70 will take the dirt off and probably enhance the tone a little. I think its cool and would keep it as is. There is nothing that is going to make it look original again.

  • I've got a number of 55, 59, & 64D in AU-MS60 that i've put in hard plastic holders that are starting to develop some toning. As far as i know, the plastic is inert, cause it's for coins. Any ideas?
