I need help, I'm really serious (guess the grade)

I really need some advice on this Mercury Dime of mine. I'm thinking of submitting it to get it slabbed. As you can probably guess it is already graded and slabbed. Please let me know what you think.

    i like the color.
it looks like it is already in an anacs or ngc slab????

  • I would guess MS66 FSB. It may go as high as a MS67, but it is difficult to judge the luster from the scan as well as see any possible surface imperfections.

    I will guess 64-65 fb.
The small pits on the surface I would think will keep it from going higher.

my guess is it's in a ANACS ms64 holder with no split bands. mike

My guess is the luster is there just not on the scan, so I would say 66fb, strike looks a little lacking for a 67.

Looks like a 65, so I'll say it's in a 65 holder, no FB designation though the bands appear right on the border of split/unsplit.

Are you looking for an upgrade/FB designation on resubmission?

  • Thanks for all the input . The coin is in a PCI slab and they graded it 65 FB. Would it help any if I sent it to NCS and had it "conserved"? Any recommendations as to a grading service? Thanks again, Matt

If you have any experience with useing jewelluster you could conserve it well enough without the NCS cost etc.
But if you could determine how well the dip would take,That is to say, knowing what kind of results
    will most likely be had.
I,m trying to say specificlly here,if you believe the coin hasn`t been dipped a few times before already
and dipping it again wont dull the luster down to zero, then maybe a dip could bring out some hidden luster
    underneath the toneing.
From the scan,it looks like the luster may not ever come back as it may have been dipped in the past more than once. But scans cant be taken as gospel.

This is a Type of 1917 Merc Dime of which you will not find a much better strike than this coin has. Really cannot see why you would consider dipping or conserving the coin. If any slide marks or faint hairlines are present on her cheek the dime will not go over MS64 from PCGS and probably the same from NGC. The bands appear to be in the maybe or maybe not catagory. Getting a 65FB grade from either service would be a big plus as this is a fairly hard date to obtain that grade.

My guess from the scan is 64FB with a outside chance at 65FB. Somewhat depends on the graders mood on the day its graded.

Kingmatt, I like that coin of yours (but i'm not coveting it!). I can't tell if there are hairlines on the obverse, but I doubt hairlines would be so straight and parallel. And did anybody notice what I think I see on both the obverse and reverse? DOUBLING. obv: very visible in the T. rev: in "ONE DIME", in the N and E, and D and I and M. OK, I admit that I haven't seen the coin, and that might be due solely to the lighting characteristics of the scanner, but I think that the rims on the obverse and reverse also show signs characteristic of some kind of doubling. Am I just imagining things?
