Final Circulation Jefferson nickel weighting posted

Many changes were made in the final weightings. Some were not. I think the weighted set is probably an improvement over the previous unweighted set, but there sure are a few anomalies.

An example, a 1939S MS66FS (total full step pop 37) has a weighting of 1.902 versus a 1953S MS64FS (total full step pop only 3) has a weighting of 1.427, or 25% more.

After seeing the results in a spreadsheet I think the relationship between weight and full step bonus is backwards. The weight serves as a multiplier while the full step bonus gets added to the coin grade, making the weighting significantly more important.

Given the rarity of certain full steps one could argue the full step bonus should represent the multiplier.

  • The weighting moved me up one slot in the all time finest. I don't think I got any closer to you.image

I agree with you on the FS issue.

  • Frank,

I haven't yet had any time to analyze this, but I'm sure you're correct in your assessment. The problem
is, if they did it your way, you would be even further ahead of me...not that I have any illusions of catching
    up with you!!!

I'm wondering how you came up with the fractional weights (1.902, 1.427)...care to share your spreadsheet?

I entered my coins in the "with varieties" set tonight, and am currently listed as #1. If you're too busy
working on that spreadsheet, I'll enter your set for you for 5c...payable only in a 1943 DDO!!! image

I'm sure you are disappointed that PCGS didn't include the 64SMS as a variety, or should this coin be part of
the 1938-1964 Proof sets, since the 65-67 SMS coins are currently part of the 65-present Proof set?

  • Ken:

I will send you the spreadsheet tonight. PM me with your email address. I don't think I have a duplicate 1943 DDO, but I will check this PM.

Do Full Step Jefferson's have a special PCGS number, similar to Cameo and Deep Cameos? If so, they should be able to weight Full Step's with one weight, and non-FS with another. Some dates may not be rare at all in Full Step, so need no additional weight, where dates like the 54-S (and 60-D, 61-D) should have a much higher weight for the FS coins. It seems that for some of these where a MS64FS is the best, a higher grade non-FS coin may be cheaper and give more "points".

If they have a weighting in place, why even use a grading bonus for FS (or RD RB copper, CA and DC proofs etc), when they can use a weighting process?

Yes - Full step Circulation Jeffersons have a 5 digit coin number that starts with 8. Non full step coins are 4 digits long and start with 4.

    I agree with your suggestion.
