  • Welcome to the boards..... to answer your question, the value of your coins is consistant with the grade (condition) The Red Book by R.S. Yeoman would help you out with the grading etc.

The first thing you need to do is to establish the condition of these coins. Condition mean everyting. A coin worth $1,000 in gem mint state might only be worth a few dollars in highly circulated (worn) condition. And you need to be aware that grading is very technical especially when grading uncirculated coins. Unless you inherited these coins from someone who purchased mint state coins, they are probably circulated coins.

To get an idea of how condition affects the value of your coins, go to the Collectors Universe home page and click on the coin price guide in the list of choices on the left side of the page and look at the range of values of your coins in various conditions. Those conditions are given numbers ranging from 1 to 70 and grade descriptions such as G for Good, VG for Very Good, F for Fine, VF for Very Fine, XF for Extremely Fine, AU for Almost Uncirculated, MS for Mint State. You will find that coins graded "good" and "very good" are not really so good as far as condition and value are concerned, so try not to be confused those terms.

Then buy some books. Yeoman's Redbook on value. Photgrade on grading circulated coins. Scott Travers' Coin Collectors Survival Manual about grading, buying, and selling. Coin Collecting for Dummies (I haven't read that one but other say it is good). The PGCS Guide to Grading and Counterfeit Detection.

    Good luck.

What would your slabbed coins be worth if the grading services went out of business? What would your coins be worth if the Internet was taken offline for good?

  • for Morgan dollars the letter on the reverse is where it was minted
    CC - Carson City
    S- San Francisco
    O- New Orleans
    (none) - Philadelphia
    D- Denver

Morgan dollars (as well as any other coin) are worth more if they show no wear and are in bright condition. Four factors affect the condition of the coin - Marks (or indentations), luster (brightness), strike (or clarity of image), and eye appeal.

  • From a cursory glance to your holdings, the 1928 Peace is a pretty rare date even in circulated condition. The 1886-O Morgan would be worth a lot of money if it was in pristine condition. In circulated condition, it is worth the same as other Morgans in circulated condition.

  • An additional note, check the 1928 Peace to see if the letter "S" is present to the left of the eagle's foot near the rim of the reverse. S (for San Francisco) are not as rare as Philadelphia (with no mint mark).
