Who wants to buy an 1889 CC 1$ in MS-something?

mrdqmrdq Posts: 1,186 ✭✭✭
My newspaper ad has brought out a widow who wants to sell her collection. She phoned me and i'm prepared to buy everything except that monster. I don't collect Morgans and if it's MS quality like she says i'm not going to drop that much cash on one coin (we're talking what, 7k to 70k?). I'm going to photograph the coin tomorrow morning at the restaurant and I told her i'd contact the morgan collectors that I know (you guys) and hook her up with some offers. She might be agreeable to consign it or ebay it with reserve but I talked her into this offer first. What I need to know is who among you would be interested in either

1. paying her a fair price (i.e. auction price and avoid the juice)
2. giving me some phone numbers of collectors/dealers that she might want to contact
3. not screwing her out of what she should realize for a coin of that rarity & condition image

There won't be any flea market bargains here but if you're a serious Morgan collector PM me or email me if you are interested in the coin or want to steer me toward someone who is.

I'm not knocking the bargain hunters, I'm one of them too, but I have to be able to look this woman in the face when she comes into my stores over the next 20 years so I am diligently trying to get her a fair price for it.

TIA,
tom

  • Your post is very interesting but the Morgan seems to be way out of my budget range. Will you sell her other coins in the collection? If you will then can you tell us what they are?

Friday at 11:00 it'll be photographed, measured and weighed. I won't know anything more until then.

Why not just put it on eBay for her with a min of 10k or whatever you feel it's worth.
If it is ms then it would be worth slabbing first in my opinion since the price will vary alot between grades.

I am curious did she know what she had?
    Was she suprised?

If not she is lucky she contacted you. The dealer in my town would have told her it's not worth much and gave her $50 for it.

Since we have learned time and again that most folks can't grade fer diddly from scans I would definitely recommend that you/she have it certified by PCGS before even considering selling or buying it. To put it in perspective there is a PCGS f15 up right now on the Heritage site and it is already at $350 with BP and likely to go up another hundred or more before it ends. You can post a pic here but for everyone's protection have it certified FIRST.

It's been suggested overnight mail and grading by PCGS/NGC.. sounds like a good idea.

  • It would be foolish to not have PCGS grade it!
You can fool man but you can't fool God! He knows why you do what you do!
  • Keep us posted. I defintely like to see a scan of the coin..Thanks
Found a circulated 1903 0 Morgan to complete my Morgan dollar collection!!
  • I guess that may be a bit pricey for me even though I collect Morgan dollars. I can probably get enough to cover the cost, but I guess I'll pass. 1889CC is a rare date, but oddly enough I haven't been collecting any Carson City Morgan pieces. I don't blame her for seeking the current appreciated price for it. It reminds me of a neighborhood that my family looked at for a home back in 1968. A townhouse was selling for $28,000 back then. That same unit now is close to one million dollars. Talk about missing out on big catch. image

What would your slabbed coins be worth if the grading services went out of business? What would your coins be worth if the Internet was taken offline for good?

The other point is that if PCGS says its a 62 they will put it in a slab and put a guarantee on it. If Tom BAJJERFAN whom nobody knows says its a raw 62 it don't mean $hit. Go to ebay on try to sell it as a $30,000 coin cuz some nobody says its a 62 and see where it gets ya.

Not only that, I would also be concered it might be a fake if I saw it on eBay raw.

If she agrees to get it slabbed, she'll realise a better return.
