PCGS graders are they the same for moderns and classics?

I have wondered if the same graders grade moderns and classics? Modern coins only cost $10 to be graded and the way people seem to complain here about modern coin submissions makes me wonder if they use much less qualified people to grade moderns? mike

  • I dont think the PCGS graders find it too exciting to grade everyday pocket change. I would spend more time focusing on coins actually worth something. image

The guys that do moderns have guide dogs which accompany them.
The other guys have white canes tipped with red.
Easy to tell between the two.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

They hire guys who don't even know what a cameo is to do the modern coins.

Yes, a great question. I wonder if there is any way to find out the answer? Could or would someone at PCGS let us know if they have "special" graders for the modern coins? image

My local dealer graded for PCGS. All he told me is that he hated to grade moderns. Looking at the same boring coins all day long. Never mentioned that a different group did different coins. This may have changed as PCGS is grading many more moderns now that the registry has actually created a demand for them.

If they hate to do moderns then why do my modern submissions always come back quicker. Case in point sent 4 orders in on the 15th of July and just got back the results (via the web) on my modern submission and the other 3 are still in grading which means at least a couple of weeks.

A grader at PCGS said yes. Another person at PCGS said no. Both of these people have/will read this thread.

Given the lousy consistency of grades for modern coins I'd guess that they allow students in the ANA grading classes to determine the grades for these coins.
