What does sms stand for. guess you folks can tell i`m a coin expert huh?

No such thing as a stupid question ... SMS is the abbreviation for Special Mint Set, issued from 1965 to 1967 when the Mint was not making proofs. They are proof like coins superior to the normal circulation strikes, but short of proof quality. There also were a few, very rare 1964 SMS issued...

The SMS designation is also sometimes used for the matte finish nickels of 1994 and 1997, and the matte halves of 1998.
