An 8? No, no, no! Make it a 9!

In running my pop report analysis program for 1971 Topps, I noticed this interesting development between yesterday and today:

YESTERDAY, 7-29-02:

Card Number: 590
Card Name: Alex Johnson
Total graded: 29
10: 0
9 (NQ): 0
9 (Q): 0
8 (NQ): 20
8 (Q): 0
7 (NQ): 8
7 (Q): 0
6: 1
5: 0
3/4: 0
1/2: 0

TODAY 07-30-02:

Card Number: 590
Card Name: Alex Johnson
Total graded: 29
10: 0
9 (NQ): 1
9 (Q): 0
8 (NQ): 19
8 (Q): 0
7 (NQ): 8
7 (Q): 0
6: 1
5: 0
3/4: 0
1/2: 0

Most likely it was just somebody kicking it back and complaining about the 8, and getting the bump via the appeals committee.

Stand up and claim victory, if this person is any of you!

Right now PSA is placing the grades out on the POP report before it goes to final verification (V2). I have had many of my cards grade PSA 8 and then the head grader looks at it and shoots it back down to a PSA 7. It tells me that it is a borderline card and that I need to crack out and send it back. I can't believe it went the opposite way..... anyway I happy for the guy.

  • This was most likley a clerical error and not a grading error. Here is another example of what I mean. I have a 1970 Dave Dunkin graded as a 9. If you look up the cert number it says the card should be an 8. Once they correct their database you will get the same flip flop in your report.
