On October 14, 2026, Danny Hamin Cho, 26, of Bayside, New York, was arrested and charged for forging a New Canaan resident's signature to steal more than $100,000 worth of gold coins delivered via FedEx.
The theft occurred on June 2, 2026, when Cho allegedly intercepted two FedEx packages delivered to the victim's home on South Avenue in New Canaan. Although the victim reported that he never received the packages, FedEx records indicated they had been signed for. New Canaan police investigators tracking the crime utilized local cell tower logs and subpoenaed IP address data, revealing that Cho's phone had received automated delivery updates and was connected to cell towers near the residence at the exact time of delivery.
Cho has been charged with first-degree identity theft, first-degree larceny, and third-degree forgery. He is currently being held on a $75,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at the state Superior Court in Stamford on December 9, 2026.
This arrest also follows broader warnings from the New Canaan Police Department regarding a surge in "gold coin scams" targeting Fairfield County residents. In those unrelated schemes, scammers posing as federal law enforcement agents coerce victims into purchasing and handing over gold coins to couriers to resolve fictitious legal threats.
