How does this get an 8????

This has to be the worst 8 I've ever seen and the cherry on top is that it is a 9 digit cert number and image captured on the cert verification. I damn well bet you if I submitted this card it would get a 5.5 or 6 at the best OR 8 (OC). I've recently seen so many beautiful looking cards getting graded 5 to 7. Do better!!

Gotta be an internal screw-up. There's just no way. Not with the grading clampdown going on. That's egregious.
It's a head scratcher. I had actually started to lean on newer 9-digit cert #'s as I primarily collect unopened packs & I've been increasingly getting burned as sellers (including major auction houses) are using older pictures of the pack which show the pack in better condition than what I ultimately receive. Had the same thing happen on cards recently so figured these newly slabbed cards are going to be in a bit better shape &'the grading standards are higher.
But recently have noticed a slew of 9-digit cert cards that are off-center as much as 85-15 & yet they're getting 8's.
And the frustration is what you mentioned -- the inconsistency.
A couple certs before the Mantle have cards with "unavailable" grades and the certs following it are 66 Topps all getting 8s with one 9. Then I guess PSA didn't like me going through the cert numbers because I got a time out. LOL
That was my thought exactly, with the grading being so stringent now. Especially on a vintage Mantle. Things that make you go hmm for a thousand Alex. Make that about six thousand Alex.
that centering is rough.

Sheeeeeesh, that's a crazy 8! My first thought was maybe it was 9 (oc) and they knocked it down to an 8 without qualifier -- but the corners wouldn't qualify it for a 9, so this one is a head scratcher...
Mech errors on the grading portion of the label are actually relatively way too common from PSA. They always have been, and they always will be.
Occasionally instances like the one in the OP are due to PSA switching which card should be in which holder with another in the same order, which also happens. In this particular case though, it's a mech error. It is not possible that the grader assigned an 8 to that card. The mistake happened at the subsequent stage down the line.
The back on that one must be flawless!
Seller/Submitter hit the jackpot with that. I'm sure he will sell post-haste. What even worse than the lack of morality from the likley seller is that some "buy the flip not the card" rube will pay big for it.

High volume seller. They hit the jackpot every day. I doubt they care about what others are speculating. It appears the Mantle card could be a consignment, as I've noticed some of their other low to mid-grade PSA cards are from a different run of serial numbers.
Their negative feedback is a good indicator, though, of how they deal with their customers. I wouldn't buy from them.
hmmm, lemmie guess they are in New Jersey (varying addresses) or New Hyde Park NY or Rochester MI ?

Is your muffin buttered?
If one of the alternative so-called 2nd tier grading companies graded that Mantle an 8, you would all say that's why you don't trust grading with them and why you only grade with PSA.
It's not even getting a Bronze MBA sticker.
Mike needs to introduce an 😆sticker for 1/2 grade overgrade and a 🤡sticker for 'Not even close!'
I like the way you think!! LMAO
It's like that Moneyball' scout speach on Billy Beane where he answers to no one.
