I can't believe how little Alex Rodriguez cards sell for. Statistically, probably a top 10 player of all-time. Stays in the limelight, announces ball games. Mcgwire and Canseco are kind of the kings of the steroids, but their cards sell for good amounts and are decently sought after. Neither was even close to the skill level as Alex.

I prefer weed over steroids. But both have provided therapeutic benefits.
To answer your concern about Alex: There are far fewer people who collect that actually LIKE him. He's not a cuddly cool dude in the same way as Jose or just an attraction bigger-than-life like McGwire. He's just not that guy. His approach as a broadcaster is too aggressive and he comes across as a know-it-all. LISTEN TO ME I'M ALEX RODRIGUEZ!! Statistically deserving of praise. As a hot commodity, not so much.
Alex Rodriguez doesn't have a real clear Topps RC. I think he didn't let Topps print his cards early on. His Classic stuff is way over printed too. McGwire and Canseco have iconic RC cards. Alex Rodriguez really doesn't have an iconic RC card.
I watched some movie about the steroid era. I don't remember the name. It made Alex Rodriguez look real bad though. His numbers are huge though.
I've heard it said a bunch that Bonds is not a likeable guy. When you see video of Bonds, sometimes they edit it to make him look real bad. Then in other edits he seems like an okay guy. I've never seen the video of Alex Rodriguez looking like an okay guy.
Good comparison Bonds and AROD. But Bonds cards sell and are highly sought after. Not sure who was actually better but it's darn close. I think the 1994 Upper Deck SP AROD is the one everyone wanted, especially the DIE CUT version. At one point the Die Cut version PSA 10 sold for around $30,000 I think.
I have a 93 Classic 4 Sport Acetate that I bought for like 3 bucks that I'm satisfied with. It's not graded though. /66000. Classic was real hot in 93. They printed an absolute ton though. Yet, so much less than most other brands.
I'm sure the SP is over printed too. SP was one of the first premium product lines. They launched retail stores around that time. Upper Deck Stores. There was one at Universal Studios City Walk, mall. They pretty much started the hype/problem I think the industry is still suffering from today. Although, people seemed to see through it in the late 90s and early 2000s.
These days, though, the hype is real. Mostly driven by social media. Guys on Facebook keep making posts saying, shouldn't this guy or that guy be blowing up?!! Known guys who haven't done anything in years to make their cards explode in value.
Jordan is red hot right now. I like Jordan, not my fav, but a great player and a good dude. BUt was he really that much better than Magic and Larry? Both of those guys are decently collected, but nowhere close to Mike. Personally the Bird Magic rookie should be the highest priced Basketball card on the market.
But to Geek's point. Jordan just seems overhyped to me. One of the best of all-time and maybe the best, but IMHO only slightly ahead of Bird and Magic on the court. Yet miles ahead of them with collectors, must be the shoes.
Personally Nacho Cheese Doritos for me, I'm a traditionalist. Can't deal with Cool Ranch.
There are half as many Bird Erving Magic RCs graded than 86 Fleer Jordans. I don't have either. So, I'd like to see the prices drop. If cards were cheaper I'd probably buy more cards. Why does everyone want everything to be expensive? How am I supposed to buy all the cards if they're all crazy expensive?
ARod was not nationally popular even as a young player. He was popular but not THAT popular outside of Seattle. Then he went to Texas and set fire to his popularity in Seattle and everywhere else with his contract and "I just want to win" lie. Then he agrees to go to Boston, that gets overturned, and he goes to New York. Boston people hate him for going to New York. New York people hate him because he's not Jeter and he flops in the playoffs, playing terribly in 6 of his full playoff seasons. And then there's the other stuff - swatting the glove going to first, yelling "I got it" on a popup while running, the fight with Varitek (though, to these eyes, Varitek was the wuss in that encounter), and on and on and on.
And, oh yeah, the steroid suspension.

tabe - interesting take. playing for the yanks puts mattingly's cards on the map in a big way. Arod playing for them and winning a WS. his stats below resemble trout (but better) and this board thinks 1M for his cards is fine, and hurts him. none of this makes any sense. i would say the media drove the hate for Arod, but how many things do they get right?

You can be unlikable but you can't be both.
Lots of guys in the HoF who weren't liked but fans respected how they played the game.
Of all the things that I abhor about A-Rod
"yelling "I got it" on a popup while running" is something I think is hilarious and I've no problem with it. If I was a MLB team owner I'd hire a professional voice-thrower (ventriloquist) to be a coach to do that type of stuff for the post season during crucial situations.
As for make a joke out of the game, Herr's Selig and Manfred have already accomplished that

Just like I take ARod's side in the fight with Varitek when most don't. Varitek was playing tough because he was wearing gear. Lame.
Yep, I dislike A-Rod but Varitek actions were lame and cowardly.
