$TD: Struck Through Error or Weak Strike

Recent picked up this coin from eBay.
1) Solid for a 58...fields, obverse are reverse, have good luster
2) 77's of this series are notorious for exhibiting a weak strike. This is typically noted in the definition of the star on the obverse.
3) This coin is the weakest strike I have seen.
4) Did NGC get it right as an error or is it simply an extreme example of a weak strike.

Looks like a weak strike to me

If the reeding is noticeably strong, then it's a strike-through.

If the reeding is clearly weak, then it's a weak strike.

If the reeding is sort of in the middle, then you haven't learned anything new by looking at it, sorry.

I've been going over this one with the usual suspects. While I agree it is the weakest 77-P I've seen, it's not the weakest by far. I would lean towards very weak strike.

I’ve seen worse. In fact, there’s an 1874 out there with pretty much the same strike

I didn't buy this as an error.....I knew it was a weak strike, simply a curiosity. Thanks TDN....I've seen weak ones as well and Lermish, if you see a weaker one, point it out to me . The head is exceedingly flat and the tops of letters erica in "AMERICA" are almost nothing. Reeding is weak. I'm not going to crack this out but Trade Dollars are typically VERY close on weight. As noted, most 77's are pretty poorly struck.

Going only by these photos, the rims look to strong and fully erupted to suggest a weak strike. This looks like a "filled die" sort of error, where leftover oil was on the die(s) prior to striking.

I find it to be very likable.
