Leaning slightly toward the old holder 65 if it had a gold sticker. But there are a number of factors that could make prices flip around on any given day.

Did that coin ever have a gold sticker? Is there any reason it might not have been able to get one?

Here is a 65 rattler green CAC that brought the same $16.8k in 4-25 as a modern 66 green CAC in 5-23. May be too many variables to have a clear answer to the question.

Good news. While checking Greysheet saw the silver melt value of the coin is up 3 percent to $51.66, so your wealth is increasing.

It all depends. One needs to pay up(within reason) if it’s a generational coin. I’m out if it’s a so-called top pop of a common coin or something like a 16-D dime or SVDB which are available pretty much anywhere.

What about top pop of an 1884-S Morgan?

I wrote top pop of a modern coin.

Regardless of coin series, it ususally comes down to what the bidder/purchaser is willing to sacrifice to gain possession. Sometimes, sense plays no part.

I see what you did there with that smoething...

FWIW, registry maniacs will want the already-graded 67 over the 65 that might smoeday get in a 67 holder.

Respectfully, you didn't. You wrote top pop of a "common coin".

Oh brother, I guess I need to ask Co-pilot. Common as in clad.

Respectfully, "common" is not a synonym for clad or modern. And it really is not unreasonable of me, or anyone else, to actually interpret "common" by the dictionary definition.

That’s certainly true. There are huge quantities of coins that are considered to be common, which have nothing to do with clad or modern. And they’re not necessarily of low value, either. As just one example, look at all of the generic pre-1934 gold coins.

No worries. I’ll be more clear next time and I promise that I won’t use copilot.

Lol. I'm all in favor of Copilot - although I prefer ChatGPT. It's just the way cladking uses it that I find a little annoying.

I'd think a PR67 would trump a PR65 anytime, with or without a gold CAC.

I’d be inclined to agree with you if I hadn’t bought the coin at CAC66 money

So were you surprised at the PR67 grade?

Just to be clear, I saw the coin online as a 65 OGH in Heritage, loved the pics and considered bidding for the color but didn’t. Then I saw it online for sale as a 67 at a great price for that grade and jumped on it. So it’s really impossible for me to be surprised at the 67 grade because I’ve never seen it in hand.

The following are the recent Trade Dollar auction sales of the OP and similar examples:
    1881 PCGS PR66 CAC 3/23 $16,800
    1881 PCGS PR65 OGH CAC 5/25 $16,800
    1881 OP PCGS OGH PR65 3/26 $10,370

Most likely the OP 1881 PR65 OGH has already been submitted to CAC and declined a green sticker because of the marks behind Liberty. This OP example being in a PR67 holder is at the high end of its value.

I think those “marks” are streaks in the toning pattern. If it’s actual marks, I don’t think there’s any way the coin would have graded 67.
