Probably a coin collector fooling around many decades ago. :)

That still could probably just squeeze in to where the mintmark should be. It would be close.

I see that guy at the gas station again who's got a 1886 ihc with a Denver mint mark on it. Still haven't seen it 😚

Based on the crud in the D, this was likely done decades ago, my guess in the late 50's or 60's. The 1960's was also when the 1950-D nickel was popular and valuable (I read an account where they were valued at $1000/roll at one point).

The possibilities for why it was made are endless, but I did think of a few:

    1. "The book said it had to have a D on the back to be vaulable, so I put one there."
    2. It was done to deceive naive new collectors who didn't know better.
    3. (Guy in a garage or machine shop, showing it to his co-workers after making it) "Hey I found one of those 1950 D nickels!" (they all laugh)
    4. (Probably/Occam's Razor) Someone was playing with a letter punch and had no idea what a 1950-D nickel was.
