Some Franklin Mint medals I came across that our hosts are now slabbing. Will add as they show up.

I was at the 1978 ANA in Houston when word spread that 60 Minutes was doing an interview at the Franklin Mint table. Considering their reputation everybody expected it to be a hatchet job, and it was when it ran a few months later. Because of that interview a lot of FM material got melted over the years. I remember buying in a 200 year History of the United States set and burning everything but the discovery of Polio Vaccine one, which I kept for myself.

Numismatist. 54 year member ANA. Former ANA Senior Authenticator. Winner of four ANA Heath Literary Awards; three Wayte and Olga Raymond Literary Awards; Numismatist of the Year Award 2009, and ANA Lifetime Achievement Award 2020. Also won the PNG's Robert Friedberg Award for "The Enigmatic Lincoln Cents of 1922," Available now from Whitman or Amazon.

Just a little over a year later the Franklin Mint buyers of silver medals could have gotten out with a nice profit. Silver rose to just over $50 an ounce at one point and people were lined up outside of coin shops to sell silver of all kinds.

    All glory is fleeting.

The Great Silver Melt was an interesting time and great way to make rarities. That plus toning helps create some rarity here which is a treat to see.
