As noted elsewhere, due to the reduced use of coins in today's society, some mints are closing (eg, Finland) while others are branching out into new products to try and stay relevant (eg, UK). The French Mint seems to fall somewhere in the middle, and is now offering e-gold: gold coins that you can take possession of, or leave in the custody of the Mint in an e-bullion type of arrangement. I think so. Maybe the French Mint wants to grab some of the bullion market by launching its own billion coin. The new twist is the e-bullion part, with an official government mint storing it for you, apparently at no charge. I haven’t heard of that before. We’ll see how it goes.
