Does Anyone know Anything about this U.S. Mint Box?
in Q & A Forum
Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if you know anything about this box labeled U.S Mint? I am not sure if it is from late 1800s or a modern reproduction. Its height is 4 1/2” x 9 1/2” and depth is 10 3/4” it weighs 12.2 oz.
It is painted red and has “ U S Mint” stenciled in gold on one side. By the “T” in Mint is what appears to be a fleurs-de-lis symbol with a date of 1878 under the red paint.
The inside and bottom are not painted but the boards are fastened together in an interesting way on the side and I can see some small nails holding it together.
Let me know what you think!

That's very cool. Try posting to the US coins forum?
Thanks!
Looking at the construction and the finger joints, I am 99% sure it is original
but that is all that I can tell you about. Have never seen anything like that.
